Active ingredient: alendronate sodium
alendronate sodium tablets should be taken at least half an hour before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day with plain water only. Other beverages (including mineral water), food and some medicines may reduce the absorption of alendronate tablets. Waiting less than 30 minutes, or take alendronate sodium tablets with food, beverages other than plain water or other drugs decrease the effect of alendronate sodium by decreasing its absorption into the body.
Alendronate sodium should only be taken after getting up in the morning. To facilitate delivery to the stomach and thus reduce the potential for esophageal irritation, the tablet should be swallowed with a full glass of water. Patients should not lie down for 30 minutes and until after their first food of the day. The product should not be taken at bedtime or before arising for the day. Failure to observe these precautions may increase the risk of adverse reactions in the esophagus.
A study in postmenopausal women reported a 49 40% reduction in bioavailability of alendronate at a dose of 10 mg daily when administered 30-60 minutes before a standardized breakfast, when compared to the administration two hours before this meal. However, in studies of treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, alendronate was effective also when was administered 30 minutes before breakfast.
Compared with intravenous administration, the mean bioavailability of oral alendronate administered two hours before a standad breakfast was 64% in women and 59% in men.
It is likely that calcium supplements, antacids, and some oral medications interfere with absorption of alendronate sodium, so that patients who receive this drug should wait at least half an hour after taking it for take other medicines.
