Active ingredient: nitrofurantoin

Nitrofurantoin is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, mainly in the small intestine. The microcrystalline form of this active ingredient (as suspension, tablets or capsules) are absorbed faster than macrocrystalline form (capsules).

The presence of food in the stomach or a delayed gastric emptying increase the absorption rate, probably because it allows a better dissolution of the drug in gastric juice.

Nitrofurantoin bioavailability is 87% fasting. This percentage increases to 94% when taken with meals.
