Risks to the infant
A small study suggests that there may be an increased frequency of bowel liquid content (3 of 25 cases, collecting data from a telephone questionnaire).
These data do not coincide with those of another prospective study, in which were not significant differences among infants whose mothers took amoxicillin while nursing compared to children of mothers who did not take antibiotics.A recent study, comparative with other medicines, recorded two cases of diarrhea and a rash among 40 infants whose mothers took amoxicillin. The possible influence of this antibiotic on the infant has not been evaluated in depth.
Influence on lactation
Amoxicillin in milk reaches its maximum concentration at 4-5 hours after the intake. With a standard dose to the mother (1,500 mg), an exclusively breastfed infant would receive, according to estimates based on the concentration in breast milk, a dose of 0.25 to 0.5% of that used for the treatment of an infection of the infant itself.
Amoxicillin is compatible with breastfeeding.
