There is very little information about the possible influence of clozapine during breastfeeding. Nevertheless, it has been shown that taking clozapine continued progressively increases the concentration of the substance in breast milk. Also there have been reports of adverse reactions in infants whose mothers were receiving clozapine, such as sleepiness and agranulocytosis.
For these reasons, it is preferable to use an alternative drug with improved safety profile and greater user experience.
If, despite the risks, the patient receives clozapine, the baby should be closely monitored, especially for possible haematological or neurological depression disorders.
Warning of the manufacturer:
Animal studies suggest that clozapine is excreted in breast milk and have an effect on the infant, hence mothers receiving clozapine should not breast feed their children.
