In the case of gabapentin, the difficulty is, besides the little information published on the use of this substance in nursing mothers, the fact that often are taking other anticonvulsant drugs, some of which act as inhibitors of the metabolism of various substances, while others have contrary effects, increasing the variability of results depending on the drug that the patient receives.

Some studies suggest that the dose received by the infant does not exceed 4% of the administered dose weight-adjusted mother.

Based on the available literature, doses that do not exceed 2100 mg / day of gabapentin produce a modest blood concentration of the substance in the baby. However, although this dose would not be exceeded, should be monitored potential adverse events in children, such as drowsiness, weight gain, inadequate or altered psychomotor development, considering that probably the mother receives also other anticonvulsant drugs.

Warning of the manufacturer:

Gabapentin is excreted in breast milk. Because of the unknown potential impact on infants, during breastfeeding, should be administered with caution. Gabapentin only be used during breastfeeding if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the baby.
