Famotidine is a drug belonging to the group of drugs called antagonists H2 or H2 receptor blockers.

These drugs are used to treat diseases which are associated with the acid the stomach.

Your doctor has prescribed famotidine to treat an ulcer, a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a rare disease called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Famotidine is also used to decrease the chance of reappearing an ulcer or symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

20 and 40 mg tablets: Excipients include pregelatinized maize starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, talc, hypromellose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium dioxide (E171), red ferric oxide (E172), yellow iron oxide (E172), ethyl alcohol and purified water. Some brands also include lactose as an excipient.

Effervescent granules: In addition to famotidine, other ingredients (excipients) are anhydrous citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate anhydrous sodium, sodium citrate, sorbitol (E-420) and aspartame (E951).

Warning:

Sachets contain aspartame (E-951). People with phenylketonuria will take into account that each sachet contains 6.74 mg phenylalanine. Also, this dosage form contains sorbitol (E-420). If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking this medicine. It also contains 457.19 mg sodium per sachet, which must be taken into consideration by patients on a controlled sodium diet.

Do not use famotidine

Normally, you need between 4 and 8 weeks of treatment to cure your peptic ulcer. To prevent recurrence of peptic ulcer, to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease or to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, you may need to take famotidine for a longer period of time. Your doctor knows how long you need to take the medication.

Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders: joint pain, muscle cramps.
