How to use glimepiride

Follow carefully the instructions of use of glimepiride provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The core of a proper treatment of diabetes includes a good diet, regular physical activity and regular checks of blood and urine. The negative effects arising from not maintaining the diet can not be compensated with tablets or insulin.

The dosage is based on the results of metabolic examination (determination of glucose in blood and urine).

Starting dose is 1 mg glimepiride per day via oral. If you achieve a good regulation, can use this dose as maintenance therapy.

If the regulation of blood glucose levels is not satisfactory, your doctor will gradually increase the dose up to 2, 3 or 4 mg of drug per day. Only in special cases, it is advisable to take more than 4 mg glimepiride per day. The maximum recommended dose is 6 mg daily.

If you have a hypoglucemic reaction following administration of a single dose of 1 mg glimepiride, tell your doctor since you can probably be regulated only with diet.

During treatment with glimepiride, you may need to lower the dose. Therefore, your doctor may need to adjust the daily dose according to your needs and even get to stop treatment.

If you are being treated with metformin and do not achieve enough metabolic control, your doctor may complement treatment with glimepiride. To do this, will indicate the required dose of the drug to be used with metformin.

Your doctor will decide if you need supplement treatment with insulin. In that case, it will indicate the dose of insulin you need to use with glimepiride's tablets .

The tablets should be swallowed without chewing, together with a little liquid.

Normally a single daily dose is sufficient. It is recommended you take this dose shortly before or during a substantial breakfast or if you do not take it, just before or during the first meal.

Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment with glimepiride. Do not stop treatment before, as your blood sugar level may become unbalanced again.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

While you take glimepiride

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking glimepiride.
