Indications and usage      ▲

Hydrochlorothiazide causes a diuresis that starts quickly and smoothly, peaking at three hours and persisting for six or more.

It is eliminated without alterations of glomerular filtration neither blood pressure in normotensive individuals; It produces a balanced excretion of sodium and chloride ion, with little increase in potassium excretion and negligible bicarbonate excretion.

It also has hypotensive properties and potentiates the action of other hypotensive agents, allowing to reduce the dose of these below the level at which side effects occur.

Hydrochlorothiazide is indicated:

As diuretic:

- Edema due to heart failure in all its degrees. Edema by cirrhosis. Nephrotic syndromes. Liver diseases in which diuresis is required. Nutritional edema. Premenstrual edema. Ionic retention caused by treatment with corticosteroids.

In arterial hypertension:

It has its own hypotensive effects and potentiates the action of hypotensive substances such as reserpine, Veratrum alkaloids, hydralazine hydrochloride, ganglioplegic, etc.

Each tablet contains 25 or 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide. The excipients are lactose, corn starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose

Tablets

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to sugars, contact him before using it.

Do not use hydrochlorothiazide

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance hydrochlorothiazide, to other sulfonamide-derived drugs or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor take this medicine if:

- In the states of anuria (lack of urine output),
- If you have kidney failure,
- If you have liver failure.

Take special care with hydrochlorothiazide

If you plan to simultaneously take potassium salts.

Taking other medicines

How to use hydrochlorothiazide      ▲

Adults

As diuretic:

Average dose: 50 a 150 mg daily.

The optimal dose is variable, it must be adjusted to the individual conditions of each patient, depending on the severity of the condition and clinical response.

You can set intermittent medication every other day, or discontinue the medication two or three days a week.

In hypertension:

Average dose: 25-50 mg daily.

In combination therapy with other antihypertensive, is essential an individual titration both hydrochlorothiazide as other antihypertensive drugs.

Children

A proportional dose to the weight (approximately 2 mg/kg/day), without exceeding adult dose.

How to administer the drug

The tablets may be taken whole, broken or crushed with the help of some water or other nonalcoholic drink.

If required simultaneously administering a preparation containing potassium, it must be ingested always dissolved in enough water. It should be discontinued its administration if appear abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.

In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion, consult the Toxicology Information Service of your country.

Accidental ingestion of large doses of hydrochlorothiazide may cause electrolyte imbalance, which may require administration of potassium besides diuretic suppression.

If you forget a dose:

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of hydrochlorothiazide      ▲

Like all medicines, hydrochlorothiazide can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

When it is administered at higher doses than recommended may cause hypokalemia.

There have been reports of hyperglycemia after administration of hydrochlorothiazide in individuals with diabetes mellitus in a latent state.

Other side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, etc.) and/or some hematologic changes that usually disappear upon withdrawal of treatment.
