Indications and usage     

Benazepril is a drug belonging to the family of inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), used primarily for the treatment of hypertension.

This drug is indicated for the treatment of

- Hypertension,
- Congestive Heart Failure,
- Chronic renal failure progressive mild or moderate, except patients with polycystic nephropathy, hypertensive or tubulointerstitial.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Each tablet contains 5, 10 or 20 milligrams of benazepril hydrochloride. The other ingredients are lactose, colloidal anhydrous silica, microcrystalline cellulose, hydrogenated castor oil, corn starch, polyvinylpyrrolidone, hypromellose, iron oxide red, yellow iron oxide. polyethylene glycol 8000, talc and titanium dioxide.

Important information     

This medicine contains hydrogenated castor oil as an excipient, which may cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking it

Before taking the drug     

Do not use benazepril

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benazepril, to other medicines in the same group (ACE inhibitors) or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If the case of a history of angioedema (manifested by symptoms such as swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty swallowing or breathing) associated with previous treatment with another ACE inhibitor.
- If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Take special care with benazepril

Tell your doctor in the following cases:

- If you have a severe kidney disease.
- If you have any disease of the heart valves.
- If you are undergoing surgery, including dental treatment or any emergency.
- If you suffer vomiting or diarrhea
- If you are going to receive treatment with Hymenoptera venom (a poison used to diagnose or treat insect sting allergy).
- If you are about to undergo or are undergoing hemodialysis, tell your doctor in the dialysis center that you are under treatment with an ACE inhibitor.

Occasionally, after starting treatment, an excessive drop in blood pressure (BP) can occur in patients with high losses of liquid or patients with greatly diminished heart function. Tell your doctor if BP declines, manifested by dizziness, weakness or nausea.

Avoid alcohol until you have talked to your doctor. Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and/or increase the possibility of dizziness and weakness.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

It may be necessary to change the dose, or in some cases, discontinue one treatment. This applies to all types of drugs, but especially for:

- Other drugs used to lower blood pressure, particularly diuretics.
- Lithium, a drug used to treat some psychological condition,
- Drugs containing potassium, potassium supplements or salt substitutes that containing potassium.
- Indomethacin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) used to mitigate the pain and inflammation.

Use with food and beverages

benazepril may be taken before, during or after meals

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do not take benazepril if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. ACE inhibitors (including benazepril) taken during pregnancy can cause serious damage to the fetus. It is, therefore, important to tell your doctor immediately if you think you may be pregnant. Your doctor will advise about the potential risk of taking benazepril during pregnancy.

Benazepril passes into breast milk, so its use in women is not recommended during breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, ask your doctor.

Use in children

Benazepril is not recommended for use in children.

Use in elderly

This medicine can be used in elderly patients.

Driving and using machines

Like other medicines to lower blood pressure, this medicine may cause dizziness and affect your ability to concentrate. Therefore, until you obtain a satisfactory response to treatment is recommended not to perform tasks that require special attention (driving, operating machinery).

How to use benazepril     

Follow carefully instructions of use of benazepril provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Remember that this medicine does not cure high blood pressure but it does help control it and to keep it down.

In general, the treatment will start with the lowest possible dose and increase the dosage gradually. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest possible dose for your needs, which will be taken one or twice daily.

It is recommended to take the medicine every day at the same hour in the morning. It can be taken before, during or after breakfast.

Hypertension

As a general rule, the recommended dose is 10 mg once a day, but your doctor may increase your dose to 20 mg once a day. The total daily dose can be administered in a single dose or in two divided doses. The maximum recommended dose is 40 mg per day in a single dose or in two divided doses.

In the case of hypertensive patients with renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min), the initial dose is 5 mg daily and may be increased to 10 mg once a day

Your doctor may simultaneously give you another medicine to help lower blood pressure (eg a diuretic). Strictly follow his instructions.

Congestive heart failure

The dosage regimen will start with 2.5 mg daily. Depending on the clinical response, the physician may increase your dose to 5 mg once a day or, in some cases, to 10 mg once a day or even up to 20 mg once daily. A single dose per day is usually effective, although some patients may respond better to two doses.

In patients with congestive heart failure and a creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min, the doctor can increase the daily dose up to 10 mg daily.

Progressive chronic renal failure

The recommended dose for progressive chronic renal failure with or without mild to moderate hypertension is 10 mg once a day. In some cases ,your doctor may give you another medicine simultaneously contributing to lower blood pressure.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take benazepril     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking benazepril.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of benazepril. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with benazepril at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with benazepril, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

If you have taken too high a dose of benazepril, the symptoms of an excessive drop in blood pressure such as dizziness or weakness will appear. In the case of overdose, tell your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Take the pack and the rest of unconsumed medicine.

If you forget to take benazepril

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for the next; then, return to the usual dosing schedule. If you miss several doses, contact your doctor.

Side Effects of benazepril     

Like all medicines, benazepril can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects, which so far have occurred with a rare frequency

- Swelling of the face, eyes, lips or tongue or sudden difficulty swallowing or breathing (angioedema).
- Dizziness or feeling of instability (especially during the first days of treatment) or weakness
- A sore throat, fever, chills.
- Jaundice
- Abdominal pain with nausea, vomiting, fever.
- Numbness or tingling in hands, feet or lips.
- Skin reactions with or without itching.
- Chest pain.
- frequent urination, painful urination, feeling of pressure and pain in the region renal.

Consult your doctor as soon as possible if you suffer any of the following side effects:

Common side effects:

A cough (dry, non-productive, especially at night and continuously), digestive disorders, rapid heartbeats, hot flashes, flu-like symptoms, headaches.

Rare side effects:

Diarrhea, nausea, nervousness, sleep disorders, altered sense of taste, tinnitus, pain in muscles and joints.
