Indications and usage ▲

Desloratadine is an antiallergic drug that does not produce drowsiness. It helps to control allergic reaction and its symptoms.

The active ingredient desloratadine relieves symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passages caused by an allergy, for example, hay fever or allergy to dust mites). These symptoms include the sneezing, runny or itchy nose, itchy palate, and itchy, red or watery eyes.

This medicine is also used to relieve symptoms associated with urticaria (a skin condition caused by an allergy). These symptoms include itching and hives.

Relief of these symptoms lasts a full day and helps you to continue your daily activities and normal sleep periods.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Tablets:

Besides the active principle, the other components of the tablet are calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, talc. The tablet coating contains film coat (containing lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, macrogol 400, indigo carmine). The transparent coat (which contains hypromellose, and macrogol 400) includes carnauba wax and white wax.

0.5 mg/ml syrup

The other ingredients of the syrup are propylene glycol, sorbitol, citric acid anhydrous, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, disodium edetate, purified water, sucrose, natural and artificial flavor (bubblegum), and yellow sunset dye.

Oral lyophilisate:

In addition to the active ingredient, includes gelatin, mannitol, aspartame, polacrilin potassium, opatint red dye (containing red iron oxide and hypromellose), flavor Tutti-frutti and citric acid anhydrous.

Dispersible tablets:

The other components of this presentation are microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium carboxymethyl starch, magnesium stearate copolymer, butyl methacrylate, crospovidone, sodium hydrogen carbonate, citric acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, ferric oxide, mannitol, aspartame, and tutti-frutti flavor.

Important information ▲

The tablets contain lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking this medicine.

This medicine may cause allergic reactions because it contains sunset yellow coloring. It can cause asthma, especially in patients allergic to aspirin.

The presentations in the form of orodispersible tablets or oral lyophilisate contain aspartame. This substance is a source of phenylalanine, which may be harmful to people with phenylketonuria.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use desloratadine

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to desloratadine or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Take special care with desloratadine

If you have impaired renal function.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

There are no known interactions of desloratadine with other medicines.

Use with food and beverages

This medicine may be taken regardless of meals.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding is not recommended to take desloratadine.

Driving and using machines

At the recommended dose, it is not expected that this medicine causes drowsy or reduce your alertness. However, very rarely some people experience drowsiness, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines.

How to use desloratadine ▲

Follow carefully instructions of use of desloratadine provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given on this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Adults and adolescents (12 years of age and older):

Take one tablet once a day. Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food.

If you are prescribed the presentation in syrup, may take 10 ml (two 5 ml spoonfuls) of syrup once a day. When using the lyophilized , open the blister carefully and remove the dose without breaking. Place it in your mouth and swallow them immediately. Do not need water or another liquid to swallow the dose.

The orodispersible tablet is taken similarly to lyophilized. Before use, carefully open the blister and remove the orodispersible tablet without crushing it. Place it in your mouth and swallow them immediately. No water or another liquid is needed to swallow the dose. You should take two tablets of 2.5 mg orodispersible or one of the presentations of 5 mg

Regarding the duration of treatment, your doctor will determine it according to the type of allergic rhinitis you are suffering

If your allergic rhinitis is intermittent (presence of symptoms for less than 4 days per week or for less than 4 weeks), your doctor will recommend a treatment regimen that will depend on the evaluation of your disease.

If your allergic rhinitis is persistent (presence of symptoms for 4 or more days a week and for more than 4 weeks), your doctor may recommend a long-term treatment

For urticaria, the duration of treatment may vary from one patient to another and therefore, you must follow the instructions of your doctor.

Children 1 to 5 years old:

2.5 ml (½ of a 5 ml spoonful) syrup once a day.

Children 6 to 11 years old:

5 ml (one 5 ml spoonful) syrup once a day. If available, you can also take a 2.5 mg orodispersible tablet in the same way as adults.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take desloratadine ▲

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking desloratadine.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of desloratadine. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with desloratadine at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with desloratadine, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

It is not expected that an accidental overdose causes a serious problem. However, if you take more desloratadine than you should, immediately consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to take desloratadine

If you forget to take your dose on time, take it as soon as possible, and then continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of desloratadine ▲

Like all medicines, desloratadine can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

In adults, side effects were similar to those produced by a dummy tablet. However, fatigue, dry mouth, and headache were reported more often than with the placebo.

In adolescents, the headache was the most commonly reported adverse reaction.

During the marketing of desloratadine, have been reported very rarely severe allergic reactions (difficulty in breathing, wheezing, itching, hives and swelling) and rash

Have also been reported very rarely palpitations, fast heartbeat, stomachache, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, gastric distress, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, difficulty sleeping, muscular pain, hallucinations , seizures, restlessness with increased body movement, liver inflammation, and alteration in liver function tests.
