The active ingredient ezetimibe belongs to a group of medicines called lipid-lowering which exerts its action by reducing cholesterol absorption in the small intestine.
Ezetimibe is indicated, jointly to diet, in the treatment of diseases characterized by the increase of cholesterol and other blood fats, such as primary hypercholesterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and sitosterolaemia. Usually, ezetimibe is administered together with other drugs called statins.

Each tablet contains 10 mg ezetimibe. Excipients are croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Do not use ezetimibe
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to ezetimibe or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.
Allergy symptoms may include:
- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).
Nor you should take this medicine:
If you have an active liver disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take it with a statin.
Take special care with ezetimibe
If you take ezetimibe with a statin, your doctor will perform liver tests (transaminases) to assess the liver state before starting treatment.
If you have moderate or severe hepatic impairment, it is not recommended to take ezetimibe
Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.
Certain medicines can interact with ezetimibe. In these cases, it may be necessary to change the dose or stop taking any medications.
It is important to tell your doctor if you take any of these drugs:
- Cyclosporine (drug belonging to the group called immunosuppressants that reduce the action of the immune system on the body's defense system against foreign agents), since both ezetimibe and cyclosporine levels in the blood can increase when the two drugs are taken together.
- Warfarin, fluindione or another coumarin anticoagulant (medicine to prevent blood clots).
- Cholestyramine (medicine to treat high blood cholesterol) as it decreases the absorption of ezetimibe, which may decrease the effectiveness of this.
- Fibrates (medicines to treat high cholesterol levels) because they may increase the blood ezetimibe levels.
- Antacids (medicines for treating heartburn and other gastric disorders), since they reduce ezetimibe absorption.
Use with food and beverages
Ezetimibe can be taken with or without food.

Special physiological situations
Pregnancy and lactation
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.
The use of this medicine is not recommended during pregnancy. It is also not recommended its use during breastfeeding. If necessary, your doctor will decide whether you should using this medicine.
Children
Ezetimibe is not recommended for children under 10 years because there is not enough experience available.
Driving and using machines
This medicine does not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.
Follow carefully the instructions of use of ezetimibe provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and treatment duration; Do not stop taking before your doctor tells, nor prolong its use more than indicated.
Ezetimibe should be taken with other medicines to lower cholesterol (statins) unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You must also continue a diet addressed to reduce cholesterol.
Usual adult dose: 10 mg ezetimibe once daily. This medicine should not be used in children.
Ezetimibe can be taken with or without food and at the most convenient time of day.
If your doctor has prescribed ezetimibe with statins, both medicines can be taken at the same time. In this case, read carefully the statin instructions .
If your doctor has prescribed ezetimibe together with a bile acid sequestrant (as cholestyramine), ezetimibe should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking the bile acid sequestrant.
If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with ezetimibe, immediately consult your doctor.
If you take more than you should:
If you take more ezetimibe than you should, tell your doctor or go to the nearest hospital casualty department straight away. Take the medicine pack with you, even if it is empty.
If you forget to take ezetimibe
If you miss a dose, simply resume your treatment, as usual, the next day. Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Like all medicines, ezetimibe can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients

Common side effects:
1. When used alone:
Neurologic disorders: Headaches.
Digestive disorders: Abdominal pain and diarrhea.
2. When used jointly statins:
Neurologic disorders: Headaches, tiredness.
Digestive disorders: Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea.
Musculoskeletal disorders: Muscular pain.
Laboratory tests: Increase of some liver function tests (transaminases).
Rare side effects:
Blood and lymphatic disorders:
Decrease in the number of platelets (thrombocytopenia rarely).
Immunologic disorders:
Allergic reactions (which may require treatment right away) including rash (rarely),
urticaria (rarely), and angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing (very rarely).
Digestive disorders:
Nausea (rarely); inflammation of the pancreas (very rarely).
Musculoskeletal disorders:
Joint pain (rarely); muscle pain (rarely).
Hepatobiliary disorders:
Liver disorders (rarely); gallstones (very rarely) and inflammation of the gallbladder (very rarely).
