Indications and usage     

Famciclovir belongs to a group of medicines called antiviral drugs.

This medicine is indicated for:

- Acute treatment of the first episode and recurrences of genital herpes,
- Suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes and the suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-positive patients,
- For prevent future episodes of genital herpes in patients with normal immune systems or eye damage due to herpes,
- Herpes zoster treatment, including herpes zoster eye infection and labial herpes.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given famciclovir.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

In addition to 125, 250, 500 or 750 mg active ingredient, the excipients include hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol 4000 and polyethylene glycol 6000.

Note: Some presentations also contain lactose.

Important information     

Some brands with this active ingredient may contain lactose, which should be considered in patients with impaired absorption of glucose-galactose, galactosemia, and lactase deficiency.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use famciclovir

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to famciclovir, to penciclovir or anoother antiviral of the same group or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Take special care with famciclovir

- Tell your doctor if you have a kidney disease, as your doctor may need to adjust your famciclovir dose.
- If you have problems with your body's immune system,
- If you have liver problems,

If you suffer from genital herpes infection, you should take precautions during sex although you have started antiviral treatment.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Certain drugs may interact with famciclovir; in these cases, it may be necessary change the dose or stop taking one of them.

- Medicines containing probenecid,

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Famciclovir can cause reactions such as vertigo, dizziness, drowsiness or confusion. Therefore, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine may affect you.

How to use famciclovir     

Follow carefully instructions of use of famciclovir provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. This drug is given orally. The tablets should be swallowed whole with the aid a glass of water.

Recurrent genital herpes infection in patients with a normal immune system:

Dose: 250 mg twice daily.

In the treatment of genital herpes, you should start taking famciclovir as soon as possible after the onset of early symptoms (pain, burning, blisters).

The first outbreak of genital herpes in patients with normal immune systems:

Dose: 250 mg TID.

Prevention of subsequent onset of genital herpes in patients with a normal immune system:

Dose: 250 mg twice daily.

Treatment of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-positive patients:

Dose: 500 mg twice daily.

Genital herpes infection in patients with weakened immune systems:

Dose: 500 mg twice daily.

Labial herpes in patients with a weakened immune system:

Dose: 500 mg twice daily.

Herpes zoster treatment :

Dose: 500 mg TID or alternatively one or two 750 mg tablets per day for one week.

Herpes zoster eye infection in patients with normal immune systems:

Dose: 500 mg TID.

Patients with kidney problems:

Depending on the severity of kidney disease, your doctor may reduce the dose of famciclovir you must take

Elderly

Depending on your kidney function, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of famciclovir you must take.

Children:

This medicine is not recommended for children since it lacks enough clinical experience for using in this age group.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take famciclovir     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking famciclovir.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of famciclovir. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with famciclovir at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with famciclovir, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

If you accidentally take more famciclovir than you should, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the National Toxicological Information Service in your country. If you have taken a famciclovir overdose, go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.

If you forget to take famciclovir

Do not take a double dose to make up the missed dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next shot, wait until be the time for the next dose and take it as usual.

If you stop taking famciclovir

Take all the tablets prescribed by your doctor, even if you begin to feel better before completion. If you stop taking the tablets too soon, the infection may reappear or worsen your condition.

Side Effects of famciclovir     

Like all medicines, famciclovir can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Some of the serious adverse effects of famciclovir are:

- Blistering of the skin and/or mucous membranes of the lips, eyes, mouth, nasal holes or genital (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
- Bruising, nosebleeds, redness or unexplained purple areas on the skin (signs of a decrease in the number of blood platelets).

Tell your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital if you notice any of these adverse effects.

Other side effects:

Rarely the patients may suffer nausea, headache or confusion (predominantly in elderly patients).
Very rarely may suffer vomiting, hallucinations, vertigo, dizziness, drowsiness (mainly in elderly patients), jaundice, rash, itching, and hives.
