Indications and usage     

Flunarizine is a selective blocker of calcium entry into cells.

This medicine is used to prevent migraine attacks in patients with severe and frequent attacks that do not respond adequately to other treatments and/or these cause unacceptable side effects.

It is also indicated for symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo, due to functional disorders of the vestibular system.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given flunarizine.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Each tablet contains 5 mg flunarizine.Excipients: lactose, corn starch, polyvinylpyrrolidone, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, and magnesium stearate. Capsules also contain lactose.

Warning:

Important information     

This medicine, in capsules and tablets, contain lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking it.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use flunarizine

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance flunarizine or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor take this medicine:

- If you have a history of depression or you suffer now this disease.
- If you have or have previously had symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders, provoked or not by the use of certain drugs.

Take special care with flunarizine

In rare cases of fatigue, this may increase progressively during treatment with flunarizine. If this happens, tell your doctor who will assess the need for discontinuation.

You should not exceed recommended dose. Patients should be monitored at regular intervals, especially during maintenance treatment, to detect as soon as possible extrapyramidal or depressive symptoms and, if so, discontinue treatment. If during maintenance treatment, occurs a reduction of therapeutic effects, treatment will also be suspended.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

This medicine can enhance the sedative effects of alcohol, hypnotic, and tranquilizers when administered simultaneously with flunarizine.

If you are taking any of these medications, consult your doctor before taking flunarizine.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Use with food and beverages

Alcohol enhances the effect of flunarizine, so you should abstain from alcohol during treatment with this medicine.

Special physiological situations

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Pregnancy and lactation

Safety of flunarizine has not been shown in humans during pregnancy. Is not advisable to breastfeeding while you are being treated with flunarizine, since there are no data available on its excretion in breast milk.

Children

It is not recommended for use in children.

Use in elderly

During treatment may occur extrapyramidal and depressive symptoms and develop parkinsonism, especially in patients predisposed to it, like elderly. Consequently, it should be used with caution in these patients

Driving and using machines

Flunarizine may cause drowsiness, particularly when starting treatment; drivers and people who handle dangerous machinery should take extra caution and should not drive or operate machinery or tools until verifying that the medication does not affect them.

How to use flunarizine     

Follow carefully the instructions of use of flunarizine provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given on this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Migraine prophylaxis:

starting dose: treatment is initiated with 10 mg daily (at night) in patients under 65 years and 5 mg daily in patients 65 and older.

If during treatment you experience a depressive state, have reactions as abnormal eye movements, tremor, muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movements of hands, neck and head or legs, clumsiness, mental confusion or any other adverse reaction, immediately consult your doctor, who probably will suspend treatment with this medicine.

If, after 2 months of initial treatment, no significant improvement is observed, consult your doctor who probably will recommend treatment discontinuation.

Maintenance treatment: if you respond satisfactorily and maintenance treatment is needed, your doctor will proceed to reduce the daily dose, by administering the initial dose in weekly cycles of 5 days and 2 rest. Even when preventive maintenance treatment is successful and well tolerated, it should be interrupted after 6 months and will restart only if needed (relapse).

Treatment of vertigo

It will administer 10 mg daily (at night) in patients under 65 years and 5 mg daily in patients over 65 years. The treatment not will last longer than the time required to achieve control of symptoms, which usually occurs before two months.

However, if after a month of treatment for chronic vertigo or after 2 months for recurrent vertigo, no improvement is observed, it is considered that the patient does not respond to treatment and it should be discontinued.

While you take flunarizine     

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

If a doctor prescribes another medicine , tell you are taking flunarizine.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of flunarizine. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with flunarizine at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with flunarizine, immediately consult your doctor.

If you use more medicine than you should

Consult your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion, consult the Poison Control Service of your country.

Due to its pharmacological properties, flunarizine may cause sedation and fatigue. There have been some cases of acute intoxication (more than 600 mg in one shot) and the observed symptoms were sedation, agitation, and tachycardia. In the case of acute poisoning, treatment consists in administering carbon adsorbent, induction of emesis or gastric lavage and supportive measures, if needed. No specific antidote is known.

If you forget a dose:

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of flunarizine     

Like all medicines, flunarizine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Common side effects:

Drowsiness and/or fatigue, generally transient and weight gain (and/or increased appetite).

During chronic treatment have been observed following severe side effects:

- Depression, which, in patients with prior history of depression may be at particular risk.
- Extrapyramidal symptoms (such as abnormal slowness of movement, rigidity, difficulty sitting, alterations of facial movements, tremor).
