Temazepam is a drug belonging to the group of benzodiazepines, being closely related to diazepam, which is one of its active metabolites and with which it shares some of its pharmacological properties.

This drug is indicated for the short-term treatment of sleep disorders (7-10 days). This medicine can help you sleep and establish your normal sleep pattern when you have trouble sleeping. Your doctor may also prescribe the drug before having an operation or a medical examination.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given temazepam.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Oral solution:

Besides the active principle, the solution contains ethanol, propylene glycol, peppermint essential oil, caramel, trometamol, citric acid, dye, glycerol, 70% sorbitol, and purified water.

Capsules:

In addition to temazepam, the capsules may contain blue dye No. 1, Red Dye No. 3, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate, red iron oxide, titanium dioxide, n-butyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, shellac and alcohol.

Important information     

This medicine in capsules contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking it.

This medicine in oral solution contains sorbitol. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking it.

Each teaspoon (5 ml) contains 10% alcohol, equivalent to 10 ml beer or 4-5 ml table wine. Consult your doctor if you have a history of problems with alcohol or liver disorders, have seizures or epilepsy, you are pregnant or have had a head injury or this drug has been prescribed for a child.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use temazepam

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to temazepam or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you have severe breathing problems.
- If you have a severe liver disease
- If you have a neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis. This disorder is manifested by fatigue and muscle weakness, which is accentuated by the efforts.
- If you have a condition called sleep apnea.
- If you have ocular hypertension (glaucoma) without previously consulting to ophthalmologist
- If you have some type of mental disorder such as chronic psychosis, phobic or obsessive state.
- If you suffer an anxiety disorder, with or without depression. This medicine may cause more often thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

Take special care with temazepam

- If you have kidney disorders
- If you have a history of excessive alcohol consumption or some kind of drug addiction
- If you have personality or behavior disorders, including schizophrenia
- If you are going to have general anesthesia, tell the doctor who treats you are taking temazepam
- If you have recently suffered a loss of a loved one. Temazepam can change the way you react and may need an adjustment of treatment.

This medicine can lead to dependence, so it should be used the shortest possible time.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Especially, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:

In a special way, you must tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs.

- Medicines for treating depression, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as for example, phenelzine
- Narcotic analgesics, such as codeine or morphine
- Medicines to treat seizures such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine or valproic acid
- Drugs that affect the emotional state (tranquilizers) or help to sleep (hypnotics)
- Antihistamines, substances used to control allergy symptoms and may make you drowsy
- Drugs for treatment of high blood pressure, such as doxazosin or moxonidine
- Antiretroviral drugs, such as zidovudine and ritonavir
- Medicines to treat Parkinson's disease, such as levodopa
- Muscle relaxant drugs, such as tizanidine or baclofen, often used in chronic neuromuscular diseases,
- Lofexidine, a medicine used in certain cases of drug dependence
- Nabilone, a drug to treat nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy
- Clozapine, an antipsychotic medication
- Disulfiram, a drug used for alcohol addiction.

Use with food and beverages

Do not drink alcohol while on treatment with temazepam. This medicine can cause drowsiness, which may increase if you take at the same time alcohol.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation

Do not take temazepam if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, plan to be pregnant or are breastfeeding your child.

Taking this medicine in late pregnancy may lead to withdrawal symptoms in the newborn or cause difficulties in feeding or breathing, with sagging and low temperature.

Children:

This medicine should not be taken by children to treat sleep disorders.

Elderly patients:

It is advisable to use lower doses in patients 65 years or more, due to the slower elimination of the drug.

Driving and using machines

You must have extreme caution if you take temazepam, as this medicine may make you drowsy and/or affect your alertness or concentration. If you are in this case, should avoid driving or operating potentially hazardous machinery.

How to use temazepam     

Follow carefully instructions of use of temazepam provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Temazepam is administered orally.

It is not recommended to use temazepam for extended periods of time (more than 3 or 4 weeks in a row).

Adults:

Sleep disorder: The usual dose is 10-40 mg before bedtime. However, your doctor may recommend taking it only when needed.

As premedication: The usual dose is 20-40 mg taken 30-60 minutes before surgery or exploratory maneuver. It is absolutely recommended that you have someone to drive you home.

Elderly patients or with circulatory disorders:

The most common doses are 5 to 15 mg at bedtime.

Children:

As noted above, temazepam is not recommended for the treatment of sleep disorders in this age group.

As premedication in the case of surgical interventions and clinical explorations, the recommended dose is 1 mg/kg without exceeding the adult dose. The doctor may change the dose, taking into account the particular circumstances of each case.

While you take temazepam     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking temazepam.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of temazepam. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with temazepam at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with temazepam, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the National Poisons Information Service in your country. If you have taken a temazepam overdose, go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Take the container with you, even if it is empty. An excessive dose can cause incoordination of movement, difficulty speaking clearly, mental confusion, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, respiratory problems and, in some cases, coma.

If you forget to take temazepam

If you forget to take a dose, do it as soon as you remember. In the event that be near your next dose, skip the missed dose and wait until it's time for the next.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop taking temazepam

You should not stop treatment unless your doctor tells you so. If you stop taking the drug suddenly you may feel nervous, irritable, have trouble thinking clearly or sleep. You may also feel depressed, lose their appetite, have tinnitus, feel dizzy or to have a headache. You may also feel out of yourself or from that surrounds you (toxic psychosis).

Other symptoms of excess dosing include diarrhea, tingling in hands or feet, muscle spasms or twitching, excessive sweating and hypersensitivity to light, noise or perception by the sense of touch.

Side Effects of temazepam     

Like all medicines, temazepam can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Immediately suspend treatment with temazepam and consult your doctor if you experience an allergic reaction.

Allergic reactions can manifest by swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing (angioedema). They can also be manifest by intense itching accompanied or not with a rash or hives.

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of impaired behavior:

This includes feelings of depression and/or suicidal thoughts, excitement or agitation, restlessness, irritability or confusion, episodes of aggressiveness or tantrums, nightmares, hallucinations, delirium, feeling out of yourself or from that surrounds you (toxic psychosis) (toxic psychosis) or to have inappropriate behavior.

Tell your doctor if any of the following side effects:

Common side effects:

- Dizziness, Drowsiness, tiredness or to have great difficulty sleeping
- Blurred vision
- Feeling unsteady, or dizzy
- Decreased alertness
- Emotional block
- Slurred speech
- Shallow breathing and faster.

Rare side effects:

The following side effects are more likely in elderly patients, at the beginning of treatment or if you take alcohol while on treatment:

- Upset stomach
- Changes in sexual desire
- Headache
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eye conjunctiva)
- Difficulty urinating
- Rash
- Visual disorders
- Memory loss
- Hangover feeling
- Jerking or muscle spasms
- Dizziness or spinning vertigo
- Difficulty pronouncing words, dry mouth or excess saliva production
- Urinary or fecal incontinence.

Rarely, they may occur blood disorders manifested by weakness, throat pain or discomfort, bleeding or unexplained bruising or hematomas, increased susceptibility to infections, ulcers in the oral mucosa (agranulocytosis)..

Tolerance:

As other benzodiazepines, take this drug (particularly, if taken for a long time) may cause tolerance to the drug's effects. This is manifested by a decrease of temazepam's effects. If you think that the drug does not act as at first, consult your doctor.
