Indications and usage     

Zopiclone is a sleep inducing agent. It has been shown that shortens the time to sleep onset and reduces the incidence of nocturnal awakenings, thereby increasing the quality of sleep and waking in the morning.

Also, zopiclone is a drug with a sedative, anxiety-reducing properties, with the ability to fight convulsions and muscle relaxant effects.

Doctors prescribe zopiclone for disorders in the rhythm of sleep and for all forms of insomnia, especially when there are difficulties in falling asleep, either initially or after a premature awakening.

In most cases, only is needed a short-term treatment with this drug that generally should not exceed two weeks.

Treatment should be initiated at the lowest dose. Do not exceed the maximum dose.

Important information     

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact with him before taking this medication.

This product contains wheat starch gluten-free. Celiac patients should consult their physician before use. Patients with a wheat allergy (different from celiac disease) should not take this medicine. This medication does not contain gluten.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use zopiclone

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance alprazolam, to drugs of the therapeutic class of benzodiazepines or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Stop taking zopiclone away if you have any rash or any other sign of allergy.

Also, you should not take this medicine:

- If you have breathing difficulties related or not with chronic sleep disorders or suffer severe muscle or liver problems.

Take special care with zopiclone

Risk of dependence

The use of zopiclone can lead to dependence or abuse. This occurs mainly after taking continuously for a long time.

To minimize the risk of dependence should be observed these precautions :

- Taking benzodiazepines will only prescription (never that have worked in other patients) and never be recommended to others.
- Not should increase the doses prescribed by the doctor,neither prolong treatment longer than recommended.

By stopping the administration of this drug, may occur withdrawal symptoms.

In some cases, can appear a transient syndrome with but more intense symptoms than at first. It may be accompanied by other reactions including mood changes, anxiety, sleep disturbances and restlessness.

You should know that there is a possibility that this rebound effect could occur in order to minimize anxiety that can produce the appearance of these effects due to a cessation of treatment.

Treatment should be discontinued at the possible occurrence of reactions as restlessness, worsening of insomnia, irritability, aggression, delusions, rages, nightmares, hallucinations, abnormal behavior or other behavioral disorders, sleepwalking and other behaviors such as driving, eating etc. without remembering these facts because the patient is not fully awake.

After taking it, it is desirable to ensure that you can sleep without being woken for 7-8 hours.

If you have a liver or kidney disorder or suffer muscle weakness, your doctor will decide whether you should to take a lower dose of zopiclone or do not take it at all.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription. It is important, especially if you are taking:

This is extremely important because the simultaneous use of more than one drug may increase or decrease its effect.

Therefore, you should not take other medicines while taking zopiclone, unless your doctor is informed and has approved its use. For example, tranquilizers, sleep inducers, and similar drugs act on the brain ornerves and may increase the effect of zopiclone.

Coadministration of erythromycin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole and ritonavir with zopiclone may increase the effect of the latter.

Conversely, the coadministration of rifampicin (medicine for infection), carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin (medicine for the treatment of epilepsy) and St. John's wort with zopiclone may decrease the effect of it.

Use with food and beverages

During treatment avoid alcoholic beverages. The effect of alcohol may enhance the sedation, and this may affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. If you need further information about this question, consult your doctor.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy

The use of zopiclone is not recommended during pregnancy.

Before starting treatment, your doctor should know if you are pregnant or suspect it or if you are planning to be pregnant. Then, the doctor will decide if you can take zopiclone.

Nursing mothers:

Zopiclone is excreted in breast milk so the use of this medication is not recommended during lactation.

Children:

How to use zopiclone

Take the medicine right before bed and swallow the tablet without chewing, with water or another nonalcoholic beverage.

Normally it will not take more than 20 minutes to fall asleep after taking zopiclone and is convenient to ensure that you can sleep without being woken for at least 7-8 hours. Otherwise, although this happens rarely, you may not remember what happened while you were awake (anterograde amnesia).

To avoid withdrawal symptoms, you should not stop taking the medication abruptly, especially if you have been taking for a long time.

Each individual dose should not exceed the limits set and the total daily dose either, unless your doctor may prescribe a higher dose.

The usual doses are:

- Adult: 7.5 mg zopiclone.
- In the elderly and patients with liver or kidney disease or chronic respiratory failure, treatment will start with 3.75 mg of zopiclone, increasing if necessary till a dose double (7.5 mg).
- Children (under 18): its use is not recommended.

Never change yourself the dose prescribed.

Overdosage with zopiclone is usually manifested by varying degrees of depression of the central nervous system, which can range from drowsiness to coma, according to the amount ingested.

In mild cases, symptoms include drowsiness, confusion, and lethargy; in serious cases, may appear incoordination of movements, hypotonia, hypotension, respiratory depression, coma and very rarely can be fatal. Generally, overdose does not represent a threat to life, unless combined with other central depressants medicines (including alcohol).

Other risk factors may be the existence of diseases and state of weakness that may increase the severity of symptoms.

If you forget to take zopiclone

Do not take a double dose to compensate forgotten individual doses.

If you stop taking zopiclone

After sudden cessation of treatment, can occur restlessness, anxiety, rebound insomnia, tremor, sweating, palpitations, anxiety, tension, confusion, irritability, restlessness, agitation, lack of concentration, delirium, nightmares, headache or muscle, hot flashes and, very rarely, seizures.

Is not recommended, in general, stop abruptly the treatment but gradually reduce the dose according to your doctor's instructions.

Side Effects of zopiclone     

Like all medicines, zopiclone can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Most patients tolerate zopiclone but some, especially early in treatment are somewhat tired or sleepy during the day.

The most common side effects are:

Nervous system disorders:

Drowsiness, headache, dizziness, vertigo, decreased alertness, confusion, amnesia (the patient can not remember what happened while he was awake after taking the medicine, therefore, must ensure that you can sleep as long as necessary,for at least 7-8 hours without interruptions).

Eye disorders: Double vision.

Gastrointestinal disorders:

Bitter taste, upset stomach (dyspepsia), nausea, dry mouth.

Disorders of the skin: Itching, rashes.

Musculoskeletal disorders:

Muscle weakness, decreased muscle tone, decreased ability to coordinate movements (ataxia).

General disorders: Fatigue.

Immune system disorders: Angioedema and/or anaphylactic reactions.

Hepatobiliary disorders: Increased liver enzymes.

Sexual disorders: Changes in sex drive.

Psychiatric disorders:

Hallucinations, agitation, nightmares, confusion, irritability, restlessness, aggression, delusions, rages, psychosis, abnormal behavior and other behavioral disturbances associated with amnesia, somnambulism.

Dependence

The administration of medication can cause physical and psychological dependence. Discontinuation of therapy may result in the occurrence of adverse effects after discontinuation of treatment such as sleep disorders, anxiety, hallucinations, palpitations, tachycardia and, in rare cases, seizures.

Depression:

The use of the drug may unmask existing depression. Since insomnia can be a symptom of depression, if it persists, see your doctor to assess your situation.
