Classification of the active ingredient meloxicam

Risk level in pregnancy: This medicine is classified as Category Category C until the 30th week, then D.

There are no adequate and well controlled studies about the use of meloxicam in pregnant women. This medication passes to the fetus through the placenta.

Meloxicam manufacturer recommends using the drug after the 30th week of pregnancy only if the risk of passing the fetus is sufficiently justified.

From that date, meloxicam and other NSAIDs can induce premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, so are formally contraindicated.

Meaning of category C

Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
