Indications and usage     

The active ingredient bezafibrate belongs to a group of drugs called fibrates,which are a type of lipid-lowering drugs, ie that decrease blood fats.

This medicine is indicated in disorders of lipid metabolism, for lowering high cholesterol and other fats (triglycerides) in the blood when dietary and lifestyle measures are not sufficient.

Each tablet contains, besides the active ingredient (200 or 400 mg bezafibrate), lactose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, Eudragit NE3OD, polyethylene glycol, talc, titanium dioxide, polysorbate 80, sodium citrate and purified water.

Important Information     

This medicine contains lactose, which should be taken into account in patients with impaired absorption of glucose-galactose, lactase deficiency or galactosemia.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use bezafibrate

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to bezafibrate, to other fibrates or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Also, you should not take this medicine:

- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If you have a chronic or severe kidney disease.
- If you have any liver disease or abnormalities in the gallbladder with or without stones (cholestasis).
- If you are being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs (MAOIs), medications for depression.

Take special care with bezafibrate

Before starting treatment with this medication, tell your doctor if:

- You are taking oral contraceptives with estrogen in its composition.
- You are taking medicines to lower cholesterol called statins or ion exchange resins.
- You are taking coumarin anticoagulants (acenocoumarol, warfarin).
- You suffer from muscle weakness or have a mild kidney disease.

If you are receiving a prolonged treatment with bezafibrate it is possible that your doctor will make frequent blood tests.

It is very important to follow the diet and other measures that your doctor has told.

If you experience any symptom indicating gallbladder stones as a severe abdominal pain, stop treatment and consult your doctor.

Your doctor will order blood tests to check the response to medication, more frequently if you are receiving a prolonged treatment.

Taking other medicines

It is important that you tell your doctor if you take any of the following drugs:

- Bezafibrate potentiates the action of coumarin anticoagulants, therefore, your doctor will decrease the dose of anticoagulant at the beginning of treatment with this medicine and frequently monitor the blood clotting.
- Bezafibrate also enhances the action of drugs for diabetes (drugs to lower blood sugar). If you are taking these drugs, your doctor may decrease the dose of the antidiabetic.
- If you have undergone a transplant and are taking medicines to prevent rejection, your doctor may recommend that you discontinue therapy with bezafibrate.
- If you are taking any medication with ion exchange resins (cholestyramine) to reduce blood cholesterol levels, you should wait 2 hours at least between its administration and bezafibrate.
- Nor you should take this medicine if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs (MAOIs), a type of medication for depression.

Use with food and beverages

The retard formulation should be taken preferably after dinner. The standard formulation should be taken preferably after meals.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Bezafibrate is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Use in children:

Children should not take this medicine unless directed by the doctor, who will prescribe the most appropriate dose.

Driving and using machines

Have not been detected any effect on the patient's ability to drive or operate machinery.

How to use bezafibrate

The dose of the retard formulation (400 mg) is 1 tablet a day. The usual dose of the standard formulation (200 mg) is 3 tablets a day.

The tablets should be swallowed without chewing, preferably after dinner. Take the tablets with a sufficient amount of liquid (a glass of water).

While taking bezafibrate

If you use more medicine than you should

Do not take more medication than your doctor has prescribed for you. If you take more than you have been prescribed, immediately contact your doctor or go immediately to the nearest hospital, carrying the container with the rest of the unconsumed medicine.

If you forget to take the medicine

Do not take a double dose to compensate forgotten individual doses. It is important taking always the medicine at the same time each day

Side Effects of bezafibrate     

Like all medicines, bezafibrate can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Although uncommon, the following side effects may appear:

Gastrointestinal disorders such as loss of appetite, bloating or nausea , which disappear generally without interrupting the treatment after 1 or 2 weeks.

Disorders of the liver or gallbladder and increased transaminases (tests that indicate liver function), biliary congestion, and appearance of gallstones (gallstones). If you experience any symptom indicator stones in the gallbladder as severe abdominal pain, stop treatment and consult your doctor.

Disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue: allergic reactions such as itching or urticaria and, in isolated cases, allergy to sunlight and generalized allergy. Rarely, hair loss.

Disturbances of blood and urine tests

Muscular disorders: muscular weakness, pain and muscle cramps. In the event of acute muscle pain without known cause, discontinue the medication.

Disorders of the central nervous system that can manifest themselves as strong headaches, and vertigo.

Reproductive system disorders: In isolated cases, erectile dysfunction
