Indications and usage ▲

Hydroxyzine is a psycholeptic and anxiolytic agent belonging to a class of compounds called diphenylmethanes.

This medicine is used in:

- Symptomatic treatment of anxiety.
- Symptomatic treatment of pruritus ( itching) and urticaria.
- Premedication before anesthesia.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

25 mg Tablets:

The active substance is hydroxyzine as dihydrochloride. The excipients are lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silica colloidal anhydrous, titanium dioxide (E171), HPMC 2910 5cp (E464), macrogol 400 and purified water.

Syrup:

The active substance is hydroxyzine (as dihydrochloride). Each ml contains 2 mg of hydroxyzine. The excipients are sucrose, sodium benzoate, hazelnut flavor, menthol, ethanol 0.13% (v / v) and purified water.

Tablets:

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told that you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult him before taking this medicine.

Syrup:

The syrup contains 3.75 g of sucrose per teaspoon (5 ml) and 11.25 g of sucrose per tablespoon (15 ml) , which should be considered in patients with hereditary fructose intolerance, problems of absorption of glucose/galactose, sucrose-isomaltase deficiency, and diabetes.

This medicine contains sodium benzoate as an excipient, that can irritate the eyes, skin and mucous slightly. It can increase the risk of skin yellowing (jaundice) in newborns.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use hydroxyzine

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance hydroxyzine, to other active ingredients (cetirizine, other piperazine derivatives, aminophylline, ethylenediamine) or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Also, you should not take this medicine:

If you have porphyria or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not take hydroxyzine if any of the above circumstances can be applied to you.

Take special care with hydroxyzine

Tell your doctor if you have any other condition or illness that your doctor may need to take into account, especially:

- In patients with a high risk of seizures.
- In patients with hepatic impairment and in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment. In these cases should be reduced the dose.
- In patients suffering from glaucoma, outflow obstruction of the urinary bladder, decreased gastrointestinal motility, myasthenia gravis o dementia.
- In patients with a known predisposition to suffer cardiac arrhythmia or in patients concomitantly treated with drugs that can cause arrhythmias.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription. It is important, especially:

Hydroxyzine may potentiate the depressant action of the central nervous system when used in conjunction with other depressant agents or active ingredients with anticholinergic properties. In such cases, the dose should be tailored to each patient.

This drug should be used with caution in patients concomitantly treated with drugs that can cause arrhythmias.

Hydroxyzine antagonized the effects of betahistine and anticholinesterase drugs. Treatment with this drug should be discontinued at least 5 days before a test of allergy or bronchial methacholine challenge, to avoid its possible effects on outcomes.

Avoid simultaneous administration of hydroxyzine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Hydroxyzine counteracts the pressor action of adrenalin.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Use with food and beverages

You should not drink alcohol while on treatment with this medicine. Simultaneous administration of hydroxyzine and alcohol may produce effects on the central nervous system. Syrup should be taken before meals, alone or diluted in water or fruit juice.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

The use of this medicine is not recommended during pregnancy. Hydroxyzine should not be taken during breastfeeding. If treatment with this drug is necessary, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Use in elderly

In elderly patients, it should start with half the recommended dose due to prolonged action of this drug.

Driving and using machines

This medicine may affect the ability to react and to concentrate. it is advised caution In patients intending to drive or to carry out potentially hazardous activities or operate machinery.

Simultaneous use of alcohol or other sedative drugs may exacerbate these effects.

How to use hydroxyzine ▲

Follow carefully the instructions of use of hydroxyzine provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, that may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Usual doses are:

Adults

For treating anxiety: 50-100 mg per day divided into 3 doses. It is recommended to administer 1/2-1 tablet in the morning, 1/2-1 tablet at noon and 1-2 tablets in the evening. In very severe cases you can use a dose of 300 mg daily.

For treatment of pruritus (itching) and urticaria: It is recommended to start with a dose of 25 mg at night, and if necessary, administer doses up to 25 mg 3 or 4 times a day.

For premedication before anesthesia: 50-100 mg daily in 1 or 2 doses. It is recommended taking a single dose 1 hour before surgery, which may be preceded by one dose the night before anesthesia. The maximum single dose in adults should not exceed 200 mg and the maximum daily dose should not exceed 300 mg.

Children

For treating anxiety:

Children 1 to 6 years: 1 to 2.5 mg/kg daily in divided doses.
Children over 6 years: 2 to 4 tablets (50-100 mg) daily in divided doses.

For treatment of pruritus (itching) and urticaria:

Children between 1 and 6 years: 1 to 2.5 mg/kg daily in divided doses.
Children over 6 years: 2 to 4 tablets (50 to 100 mg) per day in divided doses.

For premedication before anesthesia:

A single dose of 0.6 mg/kg 1 hour before surgery, which may be preceded by 0.6 mg/kg the night before anesthesia.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and can be taken before or after food. The scored tablet can be divided into 2 parts, to the best fit of the required dose for each patient.

Patients with kidney and liver problems should reduce the dose.

The dose should be adjusted within the recommended dose range, according to the patient's response to treatment.

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

Check with your doctor regularly development of disorder that motivates the use of hydroxyzine. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with hydroxyzine at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with hydroxyzine, immediately consult your doctor.

If you use more medicine than you should

If you accidentally take more hydroxyzine than you should, consult your doctor immediately.

A significant overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, fever, drowsiness, altered pupillary reflex, tremor, confusion, hallucination, a decreased level of consciousness, respiratory depression, convulsions, decreased blood pressure and heart arrhythmia that can lead to coma and cardiorespiratory collapse.

In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion, contact a Poison Information Center in your country.

If you forget to take hydroxyzine:

Do not take a double dose to compensate for forgotten individual doses. Continue taking your medicine at the usual time.

Side Effects of hydroxyzine ▲

Like all medicines, hydroxyzine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

The most common adverse effects described with hydroxyzine are:

– Heart disorders: Increased heart rate.
– Eye disturbances: Disorders in accommodation or ability to see at different distances, blurred vision.
– Gastrointestinal disorders: Constipation, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting.
– General disorders: Fatigue, discomfort, fever.
– Immune system disorders: Anaphylactic shock, hypersensitivity reactions.
– Laboratory tests: Abnormal liver function tests.
– Nervous system disorders: Seizures, dizziness, abnormal involuntary movements, headaches, insomnia, sedation, sleepiness, tremor.
– Psychiatric disorders: Agitation, confusion, disorientation, hallucinations.
– Kidney disorders and urine: urine retention.
– Respiratory, thoracic or mediastinal disorders: Bronchospasm.
– Disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue: angioneurotic edema, dermatitis, itching erythematous rash, maculopapular rash, increased sweating, urticaria.
– Disorders of blood vessels: Decreased blood pressure.
