Benzodiazepines may induce amnesia. This happens more frequently after several hours after drug administration. So, to minimize the associated risk, patients should ensure to have an uninterrupted sleep of 7-8 hours after taking the medicine.

Psychiatric and paradoxical reactions

In the treatment with benzodiazepines may appear depressed state or worsening of a preexisting depression. It can also be masked suicide trends in depressive patients, which should be monitored carefully.

Use in patients with respiratory failure

It is also recommended to use lower doses in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency due to the associated risk of respiratory depression, such as in patients with sleep apnea syndrome or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Alcohol increases the sedative effect of this medication, so it is recommended to avoid drinking.

It should be taken into account that all benzodiazepines produce depressant effects on the CNS (central nervous system) when co-administered with barbiturates or alcohol.

When the active ingredient lorazepam is taken with other medicines that act on the brain, the combination may make you more drowsy than it should.

These drugs include:

Drugs used to treat mental illness (antipsychotics (neuroleptics, hypnotic, anxiolytics/sedatives, antidepressants), drugs used for strong pain relief (narcotic analgesics), drugs used to treat seizures/epileptic attacks (antiepileptic medicines), anesthetic drugs, barbiturate and drugs used to treat allergies (sedating antihistamines).

Likewise, co-administration of other drugs such as clozapine, valproate, probenecid, theophylline or aminophylline can alter the effect of lorazepam, increasing or decreasing its activity.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Special physiological situations

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are or intend to become pregnant. The use of benzodiazepines appears to be related to a possible increased risk of congenital malformations during the first trimester of pregnancy. It has been detected that benzodiazepines and their metabolites pass to the fetus through placenta

If by strict medical requirements, lorazepam is administered during a late stage of pregnancy, or in high doses during labor, it is foreseeable to appear side effects in the neonate as hypoactivity, hypothermia, hypotonia, apnea, moderate respiratory depression, eating disorders and imbalance in metabolic response to cold stress.

Children born from mothers who took benzodiazepines chronically during several weeks or during the last period of pregnancy may have developed physical dependence, showing withdrawal symptoms in the postnatal period.

lactation

This medicine should not be used during lactation, as benzodiazepines are excreted in human milk.

There have been cases of sedation and inability to suck in infants whose mothers were treated with benzodiazepines. These newborns should be monitored for any of the aforementioned pharmacological effects (sedation and irritability).

Use in children, elderly and debilitated patients:

Benzodiazepines should not be given to children unless it is strictly needed; duration of treatment should be the minimum possible. Elderly and debilitated patients should receive a lower dose than adults because they are more susceptible to adverse effects of the drug.
