Indications and usage ▲

Olanzapine belongs to a group of medicines called antipsychotics.

This medicine is used to treat a disease whose symptoms include hearing, seeing or sensing unreal things, to have mistaken beliefs or unusual suspiciousness and becoming withdrawn. People suffering this disease may also feel depressed, anxious or tense.

Olanzapine is used to treat a disorder characterized by symptoms such as feeling elated, having excessive amounts of energy, needing much less sleep than usual, talking very quickly with racing ideas and, sometimes, severe irritability. It is also a mood stabilizer that prevents the occurrence of extreme variations in mood.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given olanzapine.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Each tablet contains 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg or 20 mg of active ingredient. The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, hypromellose, crospovidone, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate; the tablet coating contains hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171) and carnauba wax. The drug may contain other substances, depending on the commercial presentation of the product.

Important information ▲

Some specialties of olanzapine contain lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine, after checking that it contains this sugar.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use olanzapine

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to olanzapine or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

If you have been previously diagnosed of eye problems such as certain kinds of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye).

Take special care with olanzapine

- Drugs of this type may cause unusual movements, especially in the face or tongue. If this happens after taking olanzapine, tell your doctor.
- Very rarely, drugs of this type cause a combination of fever, faster breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness and drowsiness or sleepiness. If this happens, contact your doctor immediately.
- The use of olanzapine in elderly patients with dementia is not recommended as they may suffer serious adverse effects.

If you have any of the following illnesses tell your doctor as soon as possible:

- Diabetes,
- Diseases of the heart, liver or kidney
- Parkinson's disease
- Epilepsy
- Prostate problems
- Intestinal blockage (paralytic ileus)
- Blood disorders
- Cerebral infarction or transient lack of blood supply to the brain (temporary symptoms of stroke)
- If you suffer from dementia, you, a family member or your caregiver should inform your doctor if you have ever had a stroke or a lack of blood supply to the brain.

As a routine precaution, if you are over 65, it is desirable that your doctor checks your blood pressure regularly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription. It is important, especially if you are taking:

Only take other medicines while olanzapine if your doctor agrees. You may feel a sense of dream if olanzapine is combined with antidepressants or medicines for anxiety or to help you sleep (tranquilizers).

You should tell your doctor if you are taking fluvoxamine (antidepressant) or ciprofloxacin (antibiotic), as it may be necessary to alter your dose of olanzapine.

Tell your doctor especially if you are using medicines for Parkinson's disease.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.

Use with food and beverages

Do not drink alcohol if you are treated with olanzapine because the combination of olanzapine and alcohol can cause drowsiness.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Do not take this medicine during pregnancy unless recommended by your doctor.

Nursing mothers

Do not take this medicine when breastfeeding since small amounts of olanzapine can pass into breast milk.

Children

Patients younger than 18 years should not take olanzapine.

Driving and using machines

There is a risk of feeling drowsy while taking olanzapine. If this happens do not drive or use machinery. Consult with your doctor.

How to use olanzapine ▲

Follow carefully instructions of use of olanzapine provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Your doctor will tell you how many tablets of olanzapine should take and for how long. The daily dose of olanzapine is between 5 and 20 mg. Check with your doctor if you return to suffer the symptoms but do not stop taking olanzapine unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

You should take your Olanzapine tablets once daily, as directed by your doctor. Try to take your tablets at the same time every day. You can take it with or without food.

Olanzapine tablets are administered orally. Swallow the tablets whole without chewing, helping with water.

If you think that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take olanzapine ▲

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

If a doctor prescribes another medicine , tell you are taking alprazolam.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of olanzapine. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with olanzapine at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with olanzapine, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more Olanzapine than you should

Patients who have taken more than prescribed, have experienced the following symptoms: rapid heartbeat, agitation / aggressiveness, problems with speech, unusual movements (especially of the face and tongue) and reduced level of consciousness. Other symptoms may include: acute confusion, seizures (epilepsy), coma, a combination of fever, breathing fast, sweating, muscle stiffness and drowsiness or sleepiness, slow breathing rate, aspiration, high blood pressure or low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.

Contact your doctor immediately or go to the hospital, carrying the container with the rest of medicine.

If you forget to take olanzapine

Take your tablets as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop taking olanzapine

Do not stop treatment just because you feel better. It is important to continue taking olanzapine as otherwise directed by your doctor.

If you stop taking olanzapine suddenly, may occur symptoms such as sweating, feel unable to sleep, tremor, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Your doctor may suggest you reduce the dose gradually before stopping treatment.

Side Effects of olanzapine ▲

Like all medicines, olanzapine can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Very common side effects:

- Weight gain,
- Sleepiness,
- Increased levels of prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia).

Common side effects:

- Changes in the levels of some blood cells and circulating fats.
- Increased glucose levels in blood and urine.
- Increased appetite.
- Dizziness
- Agitation.
- Tremor.
- Muscle stiffness or spasm (including eye movements).
- Problems with speech.
- Unusual movements (especially of the face or tongue).
- Constipation.
- Dry Mouth.
- Rash.
- Loss of strength.
- Excessive tiredness.
- Fluid retention leading to swelling of the hands, ankles or feet (edema).
- In the early stages of treatment, some people may feel dizzy or faint (with a slow heart rate), especially when getting up from a lying or sitting. This will usually pass on its own but if it does not, consult your doctor.

Uncommon side effects:

- Slow heart rate.
- Sensitivity to sunlight.
- Loss of hair.

Rate side effects:

- Enlarged breasts in men and women (gynecomastia).

Other possible side effects:(frequency can not be estimated from available data)

- Allergic reaction (eg swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, rash).
- Diabetes or worsening of diabetes, occasionally with ketoacidosis (ketones in the blood and urine) or coma.
- Drop in body temperature,
- Seizures, in most cases associated with a history of seizures (epilepsy).
- The combination of fever, faster breathing, sweating, muscle stiffness and drowsiness or sleepiness.
- Spasms in the muscles of the eye causing rolling movement thereof.
- Abnormal heart rhythm.
- Sudden unexplained death.
- Blood clots such as deep venous thrombosis of the leg or blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism).
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which causes severe stomach pain, fever, and malaise.
- Liver disease with the appearance of yellowing of the skin and white parts of the eyes (jaundice).
- Muscle disease presenting as unexplained aches.
- Difficulty passing urine.
- Prolonged and/or painful erection (priapism).

During treatment with olanzapine, elderly patients with dementia may suffer:

- ictus,
- Pneumonia,
- Urinary incontinence,
- Falls,
- Extreme tiredness,
- Visual hallucinations,
- Rise in body temperature,
- Redness of the skin and
- Trouble walking.

Have been reported some deaths in this particular group of patients.

Olanzapine may worsen symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease

Rarely, women taking over a long period of time such drugs may secrete milk by the mammary gland (galactorrhea), stop having the monthly period (amenorrhea) or having an irregular period. If this persists, consult your doctor.

Rarely, babies born to mothers who have taken olanzapine in the last stage of pregnancy (third trimester) may have tremors, drowsiness or lethargy.
