Indications and usage ▲

The active ingredient tamsulosin is a selective adrenergic receptor antagonist alpha1A/1D. It reduces the tension of the smooth muscles of the prostate and urethra allowing passage of urine more easily through the urethra and facilitating urination. It also reduces the sense of urgency.

This medicine is used in men for the treatment of lower urinary tract discomfort associated with an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia). It produces symptoms such as difficulty in urination (weak urinary stream), drip, urgent urination, and frequent urination both at night and during the day.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Capsules: The active substance is tamsulosin hydrochloride. The other ingredients are: On the content of the capsule: microcrystalline cellulose, methyl acrylic acid copolymer and ethyl acrylate (1: 1), polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl sulfate, triacetin, calcium stearate, and talc. On the cover of the capsule: Hard gelatin, indigo carmine, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, and red iron oxide. In the printing ink: Shellac, soya lecithin, dimethyl polysiloxane and black iron oxide

Tablets: The active substance is tamsulosin hydrochloride 0.4 mg. The other ingredients are: On the tablet core: macrogol 7,000,000, macrogol 8000, magnesium stearate, butylated hydroxytoluene, colloidal silica; On the tablet coating: hypromellose, and iron oxide yellow dye.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use tamsulosin

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance tamsulosin, to other medicines in the same group (macrolides) or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Also, you should not take this medicine:

- if you have severe liver problems.
- if you feel dizzy due to a drop in blood pressure when changing position (sitting or standing).

Take special care with tamsulosin

- Periodic medical examinations are necessary to control the evolution of the disease you are being treated.
- Rarely, fainting can occur during the use of tamsulosin, like other drugs of this type. At the first signs of dizziness or weakness, you should sit or lie down until these symptoms have disappeared.
- If you have severe kidney problems, consult your doctor.
- If you will undergo eye surgery because of a clouding of the lens (cataract).

Please inform your ophthalmologist if you are taking or have previously taken tamsulosin. The specialist can then take appropriate precautions with respect to your medication and the surgical techniques.

Consult your doctor whether or not to postpone or temporarily stop taking this medicine if you are going to have this operation.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription. It is important, especially if you are taking:

Taking tamsulosin with other medicines in the same group (antagonists of alpha1 adrenergic receptors) can produce an undesired drop in blood pressure.

Use with food and beverages

This medicine in capsules should be taken after breakfast or the first meal of the day. Delayed-release tablets can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy, lactation, and children

This medicine is not indicated in women or children

Driving and using machines

There is no evidence of tamsulosin's effects on the ability to drive or operate any tools or machines. However, you should be aware that dizziness may occur, in which case you should not perform activities that require attention.

How to use tamsulosin ▲

Follow carefully the instructions of use of tamsulosin provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given on this website, that may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The usual dose is a capsule or a delayed-release tablet a day.

The capsule should be taken after breakfast or the first meal of the day. The medication must be swallowed whole and should not be broken or chewed.

The tablet can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

The tablet so-called "OCAS" is a tablet specially designed for, once ingested the tablet, is gradually released. You may notice a remnant of the tablet in your stool. There is no risk of loss of efficacy due to lack of complete release of the active ingredient.

Usually, this medicine is prescribed for long periods of time. The effects on the bladder and urination are maintained during long-term treatment with tamsulosin.

If you use more medicine than you should

Taking too much medicine can lead to an unwanted decrease in blood pressure and increased heart rate and feeling faint.

If you forget to take tamsulosin

Do not take a double dose to compensate for a forgotten dose. Take the prescribed dose as soon as possible and continue taking it every day at the same hour.

Effects that occur when treatment is stopped

When leaving the treatment prematurely, the symptoms. can worsen. Therefore, take this medicine for as long as your doctor has prescribed, even if your complaints have disappeared.

Side Effects of tamsulosin ▲

Like all medicines, tamsulosin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Common side effects: Dizziness, especially when sitting or standing.

Uncommon side effects: Headaches, palpitations (the heartbeat is faster than normal and also perceptible), decreased blood pressure for example, when you get up quickly after being in sitting or lying down, sometimes associated with dizziness, drip or stuffy nose (rhinitis), diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, constipation, weakness (asthenia), rash, itching and hives (urticaria), abnormal ejaculation. The latter means that the semen is not released through the urethra, but remains in the bladder. This phenomenon is harmless.

Rare side effects : Fainting and Local sudden swelling of the soft tissues, such as the throat or tongue (angioedema), breathlessness and/or itching and rash.

Very rare side effects: Priapism (an unwanted, prolonged and painful erection that requires immediate medical treatment).

If you are undergoing eye surgery because of a clouding of the lens (cataract), and are already taking or have previously taken tamsulosin during the intervention, the pupil may dilate poorly and the iris (the part circular and colored of the eye) may become flabby.
