Indications and usage ▲

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant. This medicine is used to treat muscle spasms due to some diseases affecting the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, cerebral palsy and meningitis or as a result of stroke or damage consecutive to trauma on head or spine.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given baclofen.

These tablets contain, besides the active ingredient, silica, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, povidone and starch wheat (with gluten).

Important information ▲

This medicine contains wheat starch with gluten. Patients with wheat intolerance, allergy or celiac disease should tell to doctor their particular situation before getting to take the medication.

In some countries, this drug is gluten-free, being suitable for administration to celiac patients.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use baclofen

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance baclofen or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

If you suffer from peptic ulcer

Take special care with baclofen

- If you have suffered a stroke
- If you suffer from epilepsy
- If you have a mental illness
- If you are being treated for high blood pressure
- If you suffer from Parkinson's disease
- If you suffer an illness from kidney, liver or lung
- If you are diabetic
- If you have difficulty urinating
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you have an intolerance to wheat flour. Tablets contain small amounts of this substance. This medicine may be suitable for celiac patients but not for allergic to wheat flour

If any of these circumstances are applicable to you, tell your doctor before taking it.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any medications, even those without a prescription or herbal remedies.

Especially tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- Medicines for depression such as tricyclic antidepressants
- Medicines for high blood pressure
- Other medicines that can affect the kidneys, such as ibuprofen
- Drugs for Parkinson's disease
- Nervous system depressant drugs, as antihistamines, sedatives, opioids derivatives for pain relief or anticonvulsants.

Your doctor may decide to perform tests periodically to check your health while taking baclofen.

If you will undergo any kind of surgery, make sure the doctor knows you are taking baclofen.

Remember your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Use with food and beverages

Drinking alcohol during treatment with baclofen can cause greater effects than expected. Avoid consumption while being treated with this medicine. If you feel unwell after taking the drug, you can do it with meals or a glass of milk.

Special physiological situations

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Pregnancy and lactation

Avoid using this medicine during pregnancy. It is not advisable to use baclofen during lactation.

Driving and using machines

Some people may feel dizzy, drowsy or have eye problems while taking baclofen. In these cases, it is not advisable driving or operating machinery which needs an adequate alertness, until these effects have ceased.

How to use baclofen ▲

Follow carefully instructions of use of baclofen provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Your doctor will tell you which is the best time to take this medication. Some patients take it only at night. The final dose will depend on the response of each patient. It should begin with a low dose, that will be gradually increased over a few days, under the supervision of your doctor, up to achieve the most suitable dose for you.

If the initial dose is too high or if it is increased very quickly, you may suffer side effects, especially if you are elderly, have kidney problems or have had a stroke (cerebrovascular accident).

You should not stop taking this medicine suddenly. If your doctor decides to stop treatment, will do it gradually to prevent signs of abstinence as the appearance of muscle spasms or increased muscle stiffness, increased heart beat (tachycardia), fever, confusion, hallucinations, mood changes and alterations of emotions, mental disturbance, feelings of persecution or seizures.

Dosage for adults:

The usual dose is 20 mg three times daily. The maximum dose is 100 mg.

If you are admitted to a hospital, the doctor may decide to raise the maximum dose as it may be subjected to tighter control.

Dosage for children:

The dose depends on the weight of the child.

The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg four times a day.

The usual maintenance dose is:

- Children 12-24 months: 10-20 mg
- Children 2-6 years: 20-30 mg
- Children 6-10 years: 30-60 mg
- Children over 10 years: 2.5 mg/kg/day

Patients with kidney disease:

In general, they should take a lower dose than usual for their age and weight. The doctor will adjust the dose to personal circumstances of each patient.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take baclofen ▲

If a doctor prescribes another medicine , tell you are taking baclofen.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of baclofen. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with baclofen at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with baclofen, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

If you take an amount higher than indicated, see a doctor immediately or contact the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Carry the package insert and the package with you.

In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion consult the Toxicology Information Service in your country.

If you forget to take baclofen

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses. Take the next dose as usual.

Side Effects of baclofen ▲

Like all medicines, baclofen can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Very common side effects (affect more than 1 in 10 patients):

Tiredness, drowsiness, nausea and feeling ill

Common side effects (affect 1 in 10-100 patients):

- Excessive weakness of the lower limbs,,
- Feeling of being tired and exhausted,
- Muscle aches
- Headache, dizziness
- Difficulty breathing
- Insomnia
- Mood changes, confusion, hallucinations or nightmares
- Dry mouth
- Eye disorders
- Instability, tremor and other muscle control problems
- Arterial hypotension
- Gastrointestinal disorders, including nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea
- Excessive sweating, rash
- Increased number of urination or discomfort when urinating

Uncommon side effects(affect 1 in 100-1.000 patients):

- Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
- Increased muscle spasms
- Altered sense of taste
- Speech disorders (slowness of speech or slurring of words)
- Stomach ache
- Liver abnormalities
- Difficulty urinating
- Sexual problems in men (erectile dysfunction)
- Seizures, particularly in epileptics

Very rare side effects (affect less than 1 in 10.000 patients):

- Hypothermia
