Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

As a general rule, diuretics should not be given to pregnant women nor should be used to treat the physiological edema(swelling) of the pregnancy. Diuretics can cause an increased risk of fetal growth retardation.

Studies in laboratory animals at doses several times higher than the usual for human revealed no fetal malformations or impairment of fertility.

However, the effect of the drug on animals is not predictive of its effect on people, and for this reason, its use is advisable only when is clearly necessary and can not be replaced by an alternative drug better known and safe enough.

Some disorders may occur with the use of this medicine, such as fetal or neonatal jaundice (yellowing of the skin and/or conjunctive), thrombocytopenia (low platelets) and other side effects.

Lactation

Indapamide is excreted through breast milk, so it is not recommended to breastfeed the baby while the medicine is used. If the indapamide use in lactating women is considered essential, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Children:

Have not been established the efficacy and safety of this drug in children, so it should not be used in this age group.

Elderly:

Available studies have not included a sufficient number of patients aged 65 or more years for determining if their behavior is different than younger patients, although available data do not show differences with regard to other adults younger. In general, is recommended to start treatment in older people with the lowest possible doses (1.25 mg, for example).

Driving and using machines

Indapamide does not affect the alertness or directly to driving itself, but can produce certain reactions in specific cases (dizziness, fatigue or weakness) due to the reduction in blood pressure, especially at the beginning of treatment or when added another antihypertensive agent. For this reason, it may be affected the ability to drive or operate potentially dangerous machinery. Before doing these tasks, it is advisable to check how can affect you this drug.

How to use indapamide
