Indications and usage ▲

Lansoprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) that decrease the amount of acid from the stomach.

This medicine is indicated in:

- Treatment of duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, and treatment of reflux esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus).
- Treatment of pyrosis (heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest, caused by acid regurgitation into the esophagus) and acid regurgitation,
- Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a disease that is characterized by a large increase in gastric acid secretion.
- Treatment of infections caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (in combination with antibiotics) in patients with benign ulcers in duodenum or stomach.
- Acute treatment of gastric ulcer induced by medicines called NSAIDs, as well as prevention of recurrence of ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Gastro-resistant

In addition to 15 or 30 mg of lansoprazole, excipients include sucrose, corn starch, heavy magnesium carbonate, methylcellulose, polysorbate 80, macrogol 6000, triethyl citrate, talc, titanium dioxide, copolymer of methacrylic acid and ethyl acrylate and sodium hydroxide. The components of the capsule are titanium dioxide, erythrosin, iron oxide red and gelatin.

Orodispersible tablets:

The active substance is lansoprazole. The other ingredients of enteric-coated granules are: Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, heavy magnesium carbonate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose of low degree of substitution, hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171), talc, mannitol, methacrylic acid copolymer and ethyl acrylate (1: 1, 30% dispersion), polyacrylate (30% dispersion), Macrogol 8000, anhydrous citric acid, glyceryl monostearate, polysorbate 80, triethyl citrate, iron oxide yellow (E172), red iron oxide (E172), crospovidone, magnesium stearate, strawberry flavor and aspartame (E-951)

Gastro-resistant capsules contain sucrose (in some countries, also lactose). If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking this medicine.

Orodispersible tablets contain lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking this medicine.

Orodispersible tablets contain aspartame. This medicine may be harmful to people suffering phenylketonuria since aspartame is a source of phenylalanine.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use lansoprazole

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance lansoprazole or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think you may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Also, you should not take this medicine:

- If you are breastfeeding.
- If you have a severe kidney disease.

If any of these situations is applicable to you or you are not sure, tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

Take special care with lansoprazole

- if you have a serious liver disease. The doctor may have to adjust the dosage.
- If you have a kidney disease.
- If your doctor prescribe lansoprazole to treat gastric ulcer caused by anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and believes necessary to maintain treatment with these drugs, your doctor will take appropriate measures to control it.
- If diarrhea occurs during treatment with lansoprazole, contact your doctor immediately, as this medicine has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhea,
- Taking a proton pump inhibitor like lansoprazole, especially over a period of more than one year, may slightly increase the risk of fracture in the hip, wrist or spine,
- Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking other medicines which can increase the risk of this disease (eg, corticoids),

If you take lansoprazole long time (eg, over 1 year) the doctor probably will monitor you on a regular basis. Tell your doctor about any symptom or circumstance you observe whenever you see your doctor.

If any of these situations is applicable to you or you are not sure, tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Certain medicines can interact with lansoprazole. In these cases, it may be appropriate to change the dose or stop taking any medications. It is especially important that you tell your doctor if you take one of the following medicines:

- If you take antacids containing aluminum or magnesium hydroxide or sucralfate; it is advisable to wait an hour before taking lansoprazole.
- If you take any type of anticoagulants as warfarin,
- If you take antiepileptic drugs as phenytoin,
- If you take drugs that act on the central nervous system as diazepam,
- If you take theophylline,
- If you take ketoconazole, itraconazole, rifampicin (used to treat infections),
- If you take digoxin (used to treat heart problems)
- If you take tacrolimus (used to prevent transplant rejection),
- If you take fluvoxamine (used to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders)
- If you take hypericum, also named St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) (used to treat mild depression)

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Use with food and beverages

For best results from your medicine, you should take lansoprazole at least 30 minutes before meals.

Special physiological situations

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Pregnancy and lactation:

Your doctor will evaluate the benefits vs risks of giving lansoprazole if you are pregnant.

This active ingredient is contraindicated in nursing mothers.

Children and adolescents:

It does not exist enough information about the use of lansoprazole in this age group, so its use is not recommended in the pediatric population.

Driving and using machines

Lansoprazole does not affect the ability for driving or operate machinery. There have been rare cases of drowsiness or dizziness. If you notice any of these (or other) symptoms do not drive cars, neither use machines or perform any activity that requires concentration.

How to use lansoprazole ▲

Follow carefully the instructions of use of lansoprazole provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given on this website, that may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment with lansoprazole. Do not stop treatment without consult before to your doctor.

Capsules should be swallowed with a little water. The orodispersible tablets have its own technique. See the booklet accompanying the pack.

To achieve the optimum effect should be taken in the morning about 30 minutes before breakfast when lansoprazole is administered once a day. If administered twice daily, should be taken by the morning about 30 minutes before breakfast and in the evening, 30 minutes before or 90 minutes after dinner.

Duodenal ulcer

The recommended dose is 1 capsule or 30 mg orodispersible tablet a day for 4 weeks.

Gastric ulcer

The recommended dose is 1 capsule or 30 mg orodispersible tablet daily for 4 weeks. If the ulcer has not healed, treatment may be continued for an additional 4 weeks at the same dose, unless the doctor modifies it.

In the treatment of gastric ulcers induced by NSAIDs in patients requiring continued treatment with these drugs, the recommended dose is 30 mg (1 capsule or orodispersible tablet) once a day for 8 weeks.

To prevent gastric ulcers in patients who already have suffered the disorder but need to continue treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, the recommended dose is 30 mg (1 capsule or orodispersible tablet) once a day as long as your doctor indicate.

Gastroesophageal reflux esophagitis

The recommended dose for acute treatment is 30 mg (1 capsule or orodispersible tablet) daily for 4 weeks. Depending on evolution, can continue treatment 4 additional weeks with the same dose, at the discretion of the doctor.

Eradication of Helicobacter pylori

For this indication, your doctor will recommend a treatment that will include antibiotics combined with lansoprazole.

Recommended schedules are:

-30 mg (1 capsule or orodispersible tablet) with 1 gram of amoxicillin and 500 mg clarithromycin twice daily for 7 days, or:
-Lansoprazole 30 mg (1 capsule or orodispersible tablet) with 250 mg or 500 mg of clarithromycin and metronidazole 400 mg twice daily for 7 days.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

The recommended starting dose is 60 mg (2 capsules or two orodispersible tablets) a day. This dose may be increased or reduced, at the discretion of the physician, based on clinical or secretion tests periodically made for the long-term control of this disease. From 120 mg recommended daily dose split into two administrations.

Because of that experience with this drug is limited, not recommended to use lansoprazole beyond recommended time periods.

If you are over 65, you will not need that your doctor will adjust the dose.

While you take lansoprazole ▲

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking lansoprazole.

Check with your doctor regularly development of disorder that motivates the use of lansoprazole. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with lansoprazole at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with lansoprazole, immediately consult your doctor.

If you use more medicine than you should

Consult your doctor or pharmacist, consult the Poison Control Center in your country or go to the nearest hospital, if you have taken a higher amount of lansoprazole than indicated by the doctor.

If you forget to take lansoprazole:

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Side Effects of lansoprazole ▲

Like all medicines, lansoprazole can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Common side effects (affect 1 in 100 patients):

- Headaches, dizziness
- diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, nausea and vomiting, flatulence, dry or sore mouth or throat
- skin rash, itching
- changes in the values of liver function tests
- tiredness

Uncommon side effects (affect less than 1 in 100 patients):

- depression
- joint or muscle pain
- Water retention or swelling
- Changes in blood cell counts

Rare side effects (affect 1 in 1000 patients):

- fever
- restlessness, drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, insomnia, visual disturbances, vertigo
- altered taste, loss of appetite, swollen tongue (glossitis)
- skin reactions such as itching or burning sensation under the skin, bruising, redness and excessive sweating
- photosensitivity
- hair loss
- tingling (paraesthesia), tremor
- anemia (paleness)
- kidney problems
- pancreatitis
- inflammation of the liver (May show symptoms as jaundice, with yellow skin or eyes)
- breast swelling in males (gynecomastia), impotence
- candidiasis (fungal infection, which can affect the skin or mucous membranes)
- angioedema; contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of angioedema, such as swollen face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives and difficulty breathing.

Very rare side effects (affect less than 1 in 10.000 patients):

- Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction may include fever, erupción, swelling and sometimes, decrease in blood pressure
- mouth inflammation (stomatitis)
- colitis (inflammation of the intestine)
- changes in test values such as sodium levels, cholesterol, and triglycerides
- very severe skin reactions with reddening, blistering, severe inflammation and skin loss (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell disease)
- very rarely, lansoprazole can cause a reduction in number of leukocytes, which can cause decreased resistance to infection. If you experience an infection with symptoms such as fever and serious deterioration of your general condition, or fever with local infection symptoms such as a sore throat, pharynx, mouth or urinary problems, consult your doctor immediately. Your doctor will order a blood test to check possible reduction of white blood cells (agranulocytosis).
