Indications and usage

Lincomycin is an antibiotic with activity against gram-positive aerobic bacteria such as streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci. This drug diffuses into organic liquids properly and also into most tissues, being effective for the treatment of infections caused by germs sensitive to this substance, both aerobic and anaerobic.

These infections include:

- Upper respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, average otitis media, scarlet fever and as a supportive treatment for diphtheria.
- Lower airways tract infections, such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia.
- Skin and soft tissue infections (boils, cellulitis, impetigo, abscesses, acne, and wound infections, erysipelas, lymphadenitis, paronychia, mastitis and cutaneous gangrene
- Bones and joints infections (osteomyelitis and septic arthritis)
- Septicemia and endocarditis
- Bacillary dysentery. Although Shigella is frequently resistant to lincomycin in susceptibility testing, the drug has been effective in vivo due to the very high levels reached in the intestinal contents.

The lincomycin parenterally (intramuscular or intravenous) is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious infections due to susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci.

Its use should be reserved for patients allergic to penicillin and other patients that, in the doctor's opinion, the use of penicillin is inappropriate.

Because of the risk of pseudomembranous colitis associated with the use of antibiotics, the doctor will assess the possibility of using other drugs with lower risk.

LINCOMYCIN IS NOT INDICATED IN THE TREATMENT OF MILD INFECTIONS OR CAUSED BY VIRUSES.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given lincomycin.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.

- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- Infants under one-month-old
- This medicine should not be administered to patients with preexisting monilial infections.

If this situation is applicable to you or you are not sure, tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

Take special care with lincomycin

- If you have a neuromuscular disorder or you are receiving a neuromuscular blocking. It has been shown that lincomycin has neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents, which should be used with caution in patients receiving such drugs.
- If you have a history of colitis
- If you have a liver disease
- If you have a kidney disease
- If you have an endocrine or metabolic disease

NOT recommended, usually use this antibiotic in case of important disease of these organs (liver, kidney). The doctor may make a functional assessment of them before or during treatment, especially if this should be prolonged.

Lincomycin interferes with the following laboratory tests:

- Transaminases (ALT/ SGPT, AST/SGOT)
- Alkaline Phosphatase

The analytical values of these liver enzymes may be elevated.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Lincomycin presents interaction with the following medicines:

- Chloroform
- Cyclopropane
- enflurane
- Halothane
- Isoflurane
- Methoxyflurane
- Trichloroethylene
- Neuromuscular Blockers
- Kanamycin and novobiocin (parenteral).
- Erythromycin
- Antidiarrheals reducing intestinal motility and absorbents, antiperistaltic opiates, difenoxin, diphenoxylate, loperamide, kaolin and attapulgite
- Medicines to treat neuromuscular diseases Chloramphenicol and narcotic analgesics.

Absorbents antidiarrheal reduce the absorption of lincomycin orally, so it should be administered two hours before or 4 hours after antibiotic administration.

Use with food and beverages

To achieve adequate absorption of the drug should be avoided taking food or drink from two hours before until two hours after taking the drug.

The absorption of orally administered lincomycin is reduced when administered in the presence of cyclamates contained in food or drink.

Taken together lincomycin and alcoholic beverages increases the risk of side effects from medicine.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Lincomycin crosses the placenta and reaches a concentration of 25% of the level of the mother in the umbilical cord. However, there are no controlled and appropriate studies in pregnant women, so it can not guarantee the safety of the drug to the fetus. A study of 322 women who received lincomycin orally at doses of 500 mg four times daily for seven days while pregnant, revealed no detrimental effect on the mother or fetus.

Studies in laboratory animals at doses above 50 times higher than used in humans have not recorded any damage either fetal or embryonic.

This antibiotic should be used during pregnancy only if the doctor considers that the benefit of its utilization exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.

lactation:

Lincomycin is eliminated through breast milk, where it can reach a concentration of 0.5-2.4 mcg/ml. Because of the risk for serious adverse reactions in the baby, lincomycin is considered incompatible with breastfeeding, so it is necessary to decide whether the drug is replaced by another or breastfeeding is suspended.

Children:

The use of lincomycin in children under 1 month of age can lead to the so-called gasping syndrome, which can be fatal, related to benzyl alcohol excipient.

Eñderñy

There are no limitations depending on the patient's age, but according to his good liver or kidneys function.

Driving and using machines

It is unlikely that the drug affects your concentration and alertness.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.

If diarrhea occurs during treatment, discontinue treatment with lincomycin and promptly consult your doctor. As with other antibiotics, treatment with lincomycin has been associated with episodes of severe colitis, which can endanger the patient's life. These are episodes of colitis caused by Clostridium Difficile and its enterotoxin. If the disease progresses, it can lead to intestinal perforation, peritonitis, and shock. It usually occurs during treatment, but sometimes it appears up to 15-20 days after taking the drug.

Overall, lincomycin for this route it is used as a diluted infusion because serious cardiopulmonary reactions may occur if administered at higher concentrations than recommended.

Subconjunctival use:

For the treatment of eye infections, this route is used at a dose of 75 mg/ each, which provides a drug concentration suitable for most of the susceptible germs.

Oral use:

Adults: One 500 mg capsule 3 or 4 times a day, depending on the severity of the case.

Children older than one month: 30-60 mg/kg/day (total daily dose) divided into 3 or 4 doses, depending on the severity of the case
