Metamizole (dipyrone) belongs to the group of medicines called other analgesics and antipyretics

This medicine is used for the treatment of acute postoperative or posttraumatic pain, colic pain and pain of tumor origin.

It is also used in high fever cases that do not respond to other antipyretics.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given metamizole (dipyrone).

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Tablets

The active substance is sodium metamizole. The other ingredients (excipients) are corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, lactose, talc, and magnesium stearate.

Capsules

The active substance is magnesium metamizole. The other ingredients are magnesium stearate, indigotin, erythrosine, titanium dioxide and gelatin.

Sachets

Each sachet contains 1 or 2 g magnesium metamizole. The excipients are saccharin sodium, mannitol, povidone K29 / 32, orange aroma and yellow-orange dye (sunset).

Ampoules

Metamizole magnesium and non-pyrogenic distilled water. Some specialties contain metamizole sodium.

Suppositories

The active substance is magnesium metamizole. Each suppository contains 500 mg or 1000 mg metamizole magnesium. The other component is fatty acid triglycerides.

Important information ▲

Tablets:

This medicine in tablets contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him before taking.

Sachets:

Some specialties contain orange-yellow dye (also called yellow-sunset) as an excipient. It may cause allergic reactions, including asthma, especially in patients allergic to aspirin.

Some specialties contain

- Glycerol: can be harmful in high doses. It can cause a headache, stomach upset, and diarrhea.
- Sorbitol: can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Do not use in patients with hereditary fructose intolerance.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use metamizole (dipyrone)

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to metamizole (dipyrone), to other derivatives pyrazolones or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- if you have suffered a decreased number of white blood cells (agranulocytosis) after using this substance.
- if you have had symptoms of asthma, rhinitis or urticaria (red spots or hives on the skin that may itch) after administration of aspirin, acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as there may be cross-sensitivity.
- If you suffer from acute intermittent porphyria (a disorder of metabolism of blood pigments that are part of hemoglobin).
- If your doctor has not prescribed this medication.
- If you suffer from a congenital deficiency of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
- If you have suffered a disorder of bone marrow function; for example, after chemotherapy or if you have had blood diseases

Take special care with metamizole (dipyrone)

- If you have any signs or symptoms suggestive of anaphylaxis/anaphylactic shock [ dizziness, difficulty breathing, rhinitis, swelling of the face (angioneurotic edema), drop in blood pressure, red spots on the skin of sudden onset] or high fever, chills, sore throat, sore mouth, nose or throat, sores in oral or genital mucosa that could indicate a decline the number of white blood cells (agranulocytosis).

In these cases, you must stop treatment and consult your doctor immediately.

- If you have had an allergic reaction to metamizole, you should not return to take a drug that contains it.

- If you have asthma produced by analgesics, bronchial asthma, chronic urticaria or if you are intolerant to dyes and or preservatives or alcohol since the risk of potentially severe allergic reactions is higher.

- If you have a preexisting low blood pressure (below 100 mmHg) or have unstable circulation or if you develop a high fever since there is a higher risk of an acute drop in blood pressure.

- If you have an impairment of kidney or liver function.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

It may be necessary to change the dose, or in some cases, discontinue one treatment. This applies to all types of drugs, but especially for:

If coadministered with cyclosporine, can reduce blood levels of cyclosporine and therefore these should be measured regularly.

Use with food and beverages

Taking metamizole together with alcohol may potentiate the effects of both.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

It is recommended not to administer the drug during the first and last trimester of pregnancy. In the second quarter, it will only be used once the doctor has evaluated the benefit/risk ratio.

The metabolites of metamizole are excreted in breast milk, so breastfeeding should be avoided for 48 hours after its administration.

Children and adolescents

In children and adolescents should be administered only under medical criteria. Metamizole use in children under 3 months or those weighing less than 5 Kg is not recommended.

Use only those specialties that can be split accurately.

Driving and using machines

It is recommended not to drive nor use machines if you are taking high doses.

How to use metamizole (dipyrone) ▲

Capsules

Adults and adolescents over 15 years:

The usual dose is one capsule three or four times a day.

The capsules should be swallowed whole without chewing, using some liquid.

30-60 minutes after oral administration can be expected a clear therapeutic effect.

Use in children

Children under 15 should not take this medicine.

Dosage in renal or hepatic impairment

In patients with impaired renal and hepatic function, in the elderly, and in debilitated patients, the administration of high doses should be avoided.

Sachets

A single-dose container (1-2 g of magnesium metamizole) every 8 hours, without exceeding 6 g of magnesium metamizole a day. You should leave a period of 8 hours between doses.

Ampoules

An ampule every 12-24 hours i.v. (deep and slowly) or intramuscularly. In the case of pain from cancer can be given up to 6 g daily, divided into 3 administrations.

The contents of the vial can also be administered orally, dissolved in a liquid (water, orange juice, cola, etc.).

The pediátric doses should be established by the doctor treating the patient.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivate the use of metamizole (dipyrone). Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with metamizole (dipyrone) at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with metamizole (dipyrone), immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, impaired renal function and rarely dizziness, drowsiness, coma, convulsions and lowering blood pressure may appear.

After administration of very high doses of metamizole, a red coloration of urine may occur which disappears after discontinuation of treatment. In the case of overdose, tell your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Take the pack and the rest of unconsumed medicine.

If you forget to take metamizole (dipyrone)

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of metamizole (dipyrone) ▲

Like all medicines, metamizole (dipyrone) can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Metamizole rarely causes allergic reactions, which in very rare cases can be serious and life-threatening.

This can occur even if you have already used on other occasions metamizole without any complication; usually, occur within the first hour after administration.

The milder allergic reactions are usually manifest as symptoms of skin and mucous membranes (eg, itching, burning, redness, hives, swelling), shortness of breath and, less often, gastrointestinal discomfort. These mild reactions may progress to severe forms with generalized urticaria, swelling of feet, hands, lips, throat and respiratory tract (angioedema), severe bronchospasm, heart rhythm disturbances, a decrease in blood pressure (sometimes preceded by an increase in blood pressure) and circulatory shock.

In patients with asthma induced by analgesics, the intolerance reactions usually are manifested as asthma attacks.

Uncommonly, have been reported drug rashes. In rare cases with maculopapular skin reactions, and in very rare cases there have been produced skin reactions in which vesicles or blisters appear (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell syndrome).

May occur rare reactions of decreased blood pressure.

On rare occasions, there has been a decreased number of white blood cell count (leukopenia) and very rarely decreased platelets count in the blood (thrombocytopenia). In these cases, inflammatory mucosal lesions, sore throat, and fever may occur.

In very rare cases have been reported kidney problems with reduction or elimination of urine output, increased the amount of protein excreted in the urine and kidney inflammation (interstitial nephritis).
