Indications and usage ▲

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks substances called leukotrienes. Leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of airways in your lungs and also cause allergy symptoms. Since this substance blocks leukotrienes, montelukast improves asthma symptoms, helps control this disease and improves symptoms of seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever or seasonal allergic rhinitis).

Your doctor has prescribed montelukast for treat asthma and prevent symptoms of the disease during the day and night.

Montelukast is used for treatment of patients who are not adequately controlled on their medication and need additional therapy.

This medicine also helps to prevent narrowing of the airways caused by exercise (exercise-induced asthma).

In those asthmatic patients in whom montelukast is indicated for asthma, it can also provide symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Depending on the symptoms and severity of your asthma, your doctor will determine how you should use montelukast.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Tablets: The excipients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate (89.3 mg), croscarmellose sodium, hyprolose (E463) and magnesium stearate. Coating: hypromellose, hyprolose (E 463), titanium dioxide (E 171), red and yellow ferric oxide (E172) and carnauba wax.

Chewable tablets: The excipients are mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, hyprolose (E463), red (E172) ferric oxide, croscarmellose sodium, cherry flavor, aspartame (E951) and magnesium stearate.

Sachets oral granules: Each sachet contains 4 mg of montelukast. The other ingredients are mannitol, hyprolose (E463) and magnesium stearate.

Important information ▲

Tablets:

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking it.

Chewable tablets:

Chewable tablets contain aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, as each 4 mg chewable tablet contains the equivalent to 0.674 mg phenylalanine. If your child has phenylketonuria (a rare hereditary metabolic disorder), you should take into account this act.

Do not use montelukast

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to montelukast or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Take special care with montelukast

If your asthma or breathing gets worse, tell your doctor immediately. This medicine is not indicated for treating acute asthma attacks. If an attack occurs, follow the instructions given by your doctor. Always have your inhaled rescue medicine for asthma attacks.

It is important that you or your child take all asthma medications prescribed by your doctor. Montelukast should not replace other asthma medications your doctor have prescribed.

Any patient who is being treated with asthma medications should be aware that if develops a combination of symptoms such as flu-like illness, tingling or numbness of arms or legs, worsening of pulmonary symptoms, and/or rash, should consult the doctor.

You should not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) if they make asthma worsen.

Taking other medicines

Some medicines may affect how Montelukast works, or vice versa.

Before taking montelukast, tell your doctor if you are taking the following medications:

- phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy)
- phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy)
- rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis and some other infections)

Use with food and beverages

Montelukast can be taken with or without food.

Chewable tablets should not be taken with meals; It should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Children

Montelukast is not expected to affect your ability to drive a car or operate machinery. However, individual responses to medication may vary. How to use montelukast ▲

It should be taken orally.

Adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older:

Should be taken a 10 mg tablet at the evening, with or without food.

If you are taking montelukast, make sure you do not take any other product containing the same drug.

Children 6 to 14 years:

The child should take one 5 mg chewable tablet a day, at evening. This medicine should not be taken with meals; It should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Children 2-5 years old:

How to administer the sachet :

Do not open the sachet till the moment of use. You can put the contents of the envelope directly into the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of soft food, chill or at room temperature, trying to thoroughly mix the content of the sachet with food. Do not wait more than 15 minutes for giving it. Do not save a part to give later. After taking the drug, you can give liquids to your child.

While you take montelukast ▲

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking montelukast.

Do not restart treatment with montelukast at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with montelukast, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Ask for help from your doctor immediately. In most cases of overdose no adverse effects were reported.

Symptoms more frequently reported in case of overdose in adults and children include abdominal pain, sleepiness, thirst, headache, vomiting and hyperactivity.

If you forget to take montelukast

Try taking montelukast as prescribed. However, if you miss a dose, just resume the usual schedule of one tablet once a day.

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

If you stop taking montelukast

Montelukast can treat your asthma only if you continue taking it. It is important to continue taking it for as long as your doctor prescribed. If so, it will help control your asthma.

Side Effects of montelukast ▲

Like all medicines, montelukast can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

In clinical studies with montelukast. the adverse effects associated with the drug most frequently reported (common side effects) were:

- abdominal pain
- headache

These side effects were usually mild and occurred more frequently both in patients treated with montelukast and in patients treated with placebo (a pill containing no medication).

In addition, the following adverse effects have been reported since the drug has been marketed:

- allergic reactions including rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing (angioedema), itching, and urticaria
- tiredness, restlessness, excitement including aggressive behavior, irritability, tremor, depression, suicidal thoughts and behavior (very rarely), dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, including nightmares and sleep problems, tingling/numbness, seizures
- discomfort, joint or muscle pain, muscular cramps, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, hepatitis
- increased bleeding risk, hematomas, painful red lumps under the skin, most commonly on your shins (erythema nodosum), palpitations
- swelling

In asthmatic patients treated with montelukast, have been reported very rare cases of a combination of flu-like symptoms, tingling or numbness of arms and legs, worsening of pulmonary symptoms and/or rash (Churg-Strauss syndrome). You must tell your doctor immediately if you have one or more of these symptoms.
