Nitrofurantoin is used to prevent and treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections such as cystitis, caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus and certain susceptible strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species.
Nitrofurantoin is not indicated for the treatment of pyelonephritis, perirenal abscesses, systemic infections or prostatitis.
This drug does not have the wide tissue distribution of other therapeutic agents approved for urinary tract infections. Consequently, many patients treated with this active ingredient are predisposed to persistence or recurrence of a bacteriuria.
Before and after the end of treatment, urine samples for culture and sensitivity tests should be obtained. If subsequent to treatment with nitrofurantoin, persistence or recurrence of bacteriuria occurs, it is recommended to select other therapeutic agents that have a greater tissue distribution. When considering the use of nitrofurantoin, must be weighed against the achieved profit with low rates of microbial eradication against the risk of increased systemic toxicity and development of bacterial resistance regarding the use of other antibacterial agents with broader tissue distribution.
Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given nitrofurantoin.
