Salbutamol belongs to a group of medications called bronchodilators. It relaxes the muscles of the walls of the small air passages to the lungs. This facilitates opening of the air passages and helps relieve chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing, so you can breathe easier.

This drug is indicated for the prevention and treatment of bronchospasm (closing of air passages in the lungs) associated with asthma attacks and in other processes associated with reversible airway obstruction. These are a group of lung diseases that cause inflammation of the airways causing a blockage in the air flow in the lungs.

Inhaler:

The active substance is salbutamol (sulfate), 100 micrograms per dose. The other ingredients are 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane or HFA 134a or norflurane q.s..

Tablets:

The active substance is salbutamol (sulfate) Each tablet contains 2 or 4 mg. The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, corn starch (gluten-free), pregelatinized corn starch and magnesium stearate.

Syrup:

The active substance is salbutamol (sulfate). Each 5 ml teaspoon of syrup contains 2 mg salbutamol. The other ingredients include sodium citrate dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, methyl cellulose, sodium benzoate, saccharin sodium, orange flavor (containing propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, butyl hydroxyanisole and orange peel extract), sodium chloride and purified water.

Injectable solution:

Each 1 ml ampoule contains 500 micrograms of salbutamol sulfate. The other ingredients are sodium chloride, sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjust) and water for injections q.s. 1 ml.

nebulizer solution:

The solution contains 5 milligrams per milliliter salbutamol (as sulfate) dissolved in water. Each package contains 10 ml. The other ingredients are benzalkonium chloride, dilute sulfuric acid, and purified water.

Do not use salbutamol (albuterol)

Adults: One application (100 micrograms) or two applications (200 micrograms) before exercise.

The usual dose for continued use is:

Adults and children: up to two applications (200 micrograms) four times a day.

Generally, the maximum dose for 24 hours is 8 applications (800 micrograms). Do not inhale more applications or use your inhaler more frequently than directed by your doctor.

Your doctor may advise you to inhale more applications as an emergency treatment if you have wheezing or more severe breathing problems. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding the number and frequency of applications thereof.

Some people may find it difficult to release an application just before aspirating. Inhalation chambers help solve this problem. Your doctor or pharmacist will advise you.

For babies and toddlers are available some specific devices to help get the most out of the inhaler.

If just after drug administration, your breathing or shortness of breath begins to worsen, stop using it immediately and contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Nervous system disorders

Common side effects: Tachycardia.

Uncommon side effects: Palpitations.

Very rare side effects: Cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and extrasystoles (heart rhythm disorders).
