Indications and usage     

Sucralfate belongs to group of anti-ulcer drugs. This medicine works by forming a protective barrier over the gastric or duodenal mucosa, helping to curb the subsequent irritation provoked by stomach acid on ulcers or inflammations of this part of digestive tract.

Sucralfate is indicated for treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers, stomach inflammation (gastritis) and for preventing gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill patients admitted to the hospital.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Tablets:

In addition to active ingredient (500 mg or 1000 mg), the other ingredients are: macrogol 6000, microcrystalline cellulose, carmellose calcium and magnesium stearate.

Oral suspension:

Besides 10 or 20% sucralfate (500 mg /5 ml or 1 g /5 ml), suspension contains glycerin, xanthan gum, sodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, aniseed essence, caramel essence , sodium saccharin and purified water.

Important information     

Oral suspension contains propyl and methyl paraben, which can cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).

Before taking the drug     

Do not use sucralfate

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to sucralfate or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

If you are receiving dialysis for kidney problems.

Take special care with sucralfate

- Before starting sucralfate treatment, your doctor should check if you are being treated with rye ergot alkaloids.
- If you have any important disease in the kidneys (renal failure).
- If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- If you have an intestinal disease, if you have undergone bowel surgery or you are suffering disturbances of bowel movements by certain medications (e.g. anticholinergics). Consult your doctor, since there are rare case reports of blockage of intestinal transit in patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders..

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Especially, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:

- Medicines containing citric acid salts (citrate),
- Medicines containing aluminum salts,
- Antiulcer medicines, such as ranitidine or cimetidine,
- Antibiotics, such as tetracycline, colistin, tobramycin or fluorquinolones,(eg ciprofloxacin or norfloxacin),
- Sulpiride, a medicine for treating certain types of vertigo and mental disorders,
- Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, clomipramine, nortriptyline),
- Digoxin, a drug to treat heart diseases,
- Phenytoin, for treating epilepsy,
- Warfarin, an anticoagulant drug,
- Theophylline, a drug used to treat asthma,
- Levothyroxine, a drug to treat thyroid diseases,
- Chenodeoxycholic and ursodeoxycholic acid, for treating gallstones,
- Quinidine, an antiarrhythmic drug (heart),
- Medicines for fungal infections, such as ketoconazole or amphotericin B.

If you are taking any of these medicines, leave two hours or a greater interval between taking sucralfate and the other medicine. In the case of antacids, it may be only half an hour.

Use with food and beverages

Sucralfate should be taken one hour before meals.

If you are being fed by gavage, leave an interval of at least one hour between meals and sucralfate, either before or after.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy

Before taking sucralfate, consult your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not take this medicine unless your doctor tells you.

Lactation:

Before taking sucralfate, consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding or plan to do it. Do not take this medicine unless your doctor tells you so.

Children:

This medicine should not be given to children under 14 years.

Driving and using machines

Although only occasionally, this medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness. If this happens, do not drive or operate machinery or tools that might pose a risk to you or others.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.

How to use sucralfate     

Follow exactly instructions of use of sucralfate provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The tablets should be dissolved in half a glass of water or swallowed with water.

Usual doses:

Guideline No. 1: Two tablespoons (10 ml) or two 1-gram tablets when getting up in the morning and two teaspoons (10 ml) or two 1-gram tablets at bedtime.

Guideline No. 2: One teaspoon (5 ml)) or a 1 gram tablet four times a day, taking the first three doses before the three main meals and the fourth just before bedtime. In severe cases, such as patients admitted with high risk of bleeding, may increase the number of doses to six teaspoons or tablets a day

In the most frequent cases, treatment with sucralfate should be done during 4-6 weeks, but in some situations, can be extended to 12 weeks. The maximum daily dose is 8 teaspoons (40 ml) or tablets a day.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take sucralfate     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking sucralfate.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of sucralfate. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with sucralfate at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with sucralfate, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the National Poisons Information Service in your country. If you have taken an overdose of sucralfate, go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.

If you forget to take sucralfate

Take the appropriate dose as soon as you remember.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop taking sucralfate

No stop taking sucralfate without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects of sucralfate     

Like all medicines, sucralfate can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Immediately discontinue treatment if you have an allergic reaction. This reaction can manifest as skin rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue (angioedema) and other rare and severe signs such as fading, loss of consciousness and shock.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects gets serious or lasts longer than a few days:

- Constipation o diarrhea,
- Indigestion, stomach upset, dry mouth, increased flatulence,
- Vomiting or nausea,
- Headache, dizziness, vertigo, drowsiness, back pain,
- Itching.
