Indications and usage ▲

The active ingredient sumatriptan belongs to the group of anti-migraine drugs. It is considered that the dilation of blood vessels skull causes headaches in migraine disorders. This drug constricts blood vessels in the skull and relieves migraine symptoms.

This medication is used to relieve a headache and other symptoms of a migraine attack.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given sumatriptan.

Tablets:

In addition to 50 or 100 mg of the active ingredient, the tablets incorporate the following inactive ingredients: anhydrous calcium hydrogen phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium hydrogen carbonate, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, and glycerol triacetate, lactose, crospovidone, silica colloidal anhydrous, opadry (white, pink).

Injectable solution:

Each prefilled syringe contains 6 mg sumatriptan in 0.5 ml solution. Also contains sodium chloride and water for injection.

Nasal solution:

Besides sumatriptan. the nasal spray also contains monobasic potassium phosphate, dibasic anhydrous sodium phosphate, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and purified water.

Important information ▲

The tablets may contain lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to sugars, contact him before taking it.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use sumatriptan

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to sumatriptan or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you are taking medicines containing ergotamine or its derivatives,
- If you are taking or have taken within the last two weeks antidepressant drugs, particularly those containing monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

- f you have had a heart attack, you have angina or a heart disease, nor if sometimes you suffer difficulty breathing or feel pain or tightness in the chest
- If you had an accident that affected the brain vessels,
- If you have uncontrolled high blood pressure ,
- If you have a severe liver failure,
- If you take herbal preparations containing St. John's wort (hypericum).

Take special care with sumatriptan

- If a headache that is not the usual migraine appears, you should tell the doctor or pharmacist.
- If you are allergic to antibiotics called sulfonamides. If you are allergic to an antibiotic, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you have a history of heart disease.
- If you have a history of seizures or other risk factors that lower the threshold seizures.
- If you are among the group of people at risk of having a heart problem, such as men over 40 and postmenopausal women.
- If you are overweight or suffer diabetes, high blood cholesterol levels or you are a smoker.
- If you have had epilepsy or brain injury.
- If you have high blood pressure well controlled.
- If you have any liver disease or kidney.
- If you are under 18 or over 65 years.

If you will undergo a blood test to check the status of the liver. Tell your doctor, since the use of sumatriptan could influence the results.

Continuous administration of this drug does not prevent new migraine attacks nor reduce the number of migraine attacks that you may have and may even aggravate headaches. If this occurs, consult your doctor as it may be necessary to stop taking this medicine for a time.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

You should not take sumatriptan together with:

- Medicines containing ergotamine or its derivatives
- Antidepressant medications, particularly those containing monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
- If you have taken during the last 24 hours another drug in the same group, such as naratriptan, zolmitriptan, etc..
- Medicinal plants containing St. John's wort.

Special physiological situations

How to use sumatriptan ▲

Follow carefully instructions of use of sumatriptan provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The tablets should be taken as soon as migraine symptoms appear; However, they may be taken at any time during an attack.

The recommended dose is one sumatriptan tablet of 50 mg, although some patients may need a dose of 100 milligrams (a 100 mg tablet). If you don't get an improvement after the administration of a dose, do not take a second dose for the same migraine attack. However, sumatriptan can be taken for further attacks. Do not take more than 300 mg in 24 hours

If you do not feel a relief of symptoms with sumatriptan, puedeá take their usual medication for a headache, as long as it does not contain ergotamine or dihydroergotamine.

Swallow the tablets whole with a little water.

Nasal spray:

This form is suitable for adults and children 12 years and over.

The recommended dose is 10 or 20 mg. Your doctor will tell you which dose is right for you.

If the nasal spray relieves your migraine, but the symptoms come back later, you may use another nasal spray, but you must wait for at least two hours between the two nasal doses.

Do not use more than 40 mg of nasal spray during a24 hours period.

As with the other presentations, do not repeat the dose of nasal spray if you do not feel an improvement from your symptoms. Instead, you may take your usual headache relief medication provided it does not contain ergotamine or methysergide.

It is recommended to use this presentation when a migraine headache begins or when you have other symptoms, such as nausea (feeling sick), vomiting or you become sensitive to light.

Injectable solution:

This form is suitable for adults aged 18 to 65.

The recommended dose is one injection of 6 mg, just under the skin, on the outside of the thigh.

If the first injection improves your migraine, but the symptoms come back later, you may use another injection. You must wait for at least one hour between injections. Do not use more than 2 injections during each 24 hours period.

Do not use the second injection, or any other form of sumatriptan, if the first injection has not provided any relief.

Provided there are no side effects, you can use the injection form to treat at least three separate migraine attacks before your doctor decide this medicine is ineffective for you.

The injection should be injected just under the skin on the outside of the thigh using the autoinjector.

It is recommended to use this presentation when a migraine headache begins or when you have other symptoms, such as nausea (feeling sick), vomiting or you become sensitive to light.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take sumatriptan ▲

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking sumatriptan.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of sumatriptan. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with sumatriptan at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with sumatriptan, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Immediately consult your doctor or call the Poisons Information Centre for advice. if you think you or anyone else may have used too sumatriptan, even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. You may need urgent medical attention.

If you forget to take sumatriptan

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of sumatriptan ▲

Like all medicines, sumatriptan can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

If you have any of the following symptoms soon after taking sumatriptan tablets, stop taking them and consult your doctor immediately.

- Seizures
- Pain in the lower abdomen and/or appearance of blood in the stool
- Sudden onset of wheezing breathing. (bronchospasm) and pain or tightness in the chest
- Swollen eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue (angioedema)
- Appearance of hives on the skin or urticaria

If you have other symptoms that do not understand, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Other symptoms you may experience include:

- Pain or tingling sensations
- Heat
- Heaviness or pressure in any part of the body, including the chest or throat .

- These symptoms can be intense but usually disappear quickly. If symptoms continue and are serious, talk to your doctor immediately because it may be a sign of a heart attack.

Do not take more tablets until you have consulted your doctor about your symptoms.

You can also have the following symptoms:

- Tiredness or drowsiness
- Dizziness or vertigo
- A feeling of weakness or fatigue
- Heartbeats unusually slow or fast or a feeling that the beats are irregular and/or heavy
- Nausea or vomiting
- Flushing (redness in the face of short duration)
- Vision disorders.
- Tremor, dystonia (involuntary contractions of muscles of one or more body parts).

If any of these symptoms occurs, stop taking this medicine but tell your doctor at your next visit.

If you have undergone a blood test to check how your liver is working and has taken sumatriptan, tell your doctor, as it can affect the results
