Indications and usage     

Tizanidine belongs to a group of drugs called muscle relaxants. It is indicated for the treatment of muscle disorders associated with muscle spasm, such as:

- Musculoskeletal disorders of the spine, such as back pain, cervical or dorsal sprains, torticollis, etc. .
- musculoskeletal surgeries such as disc herniation intervention,
- Chronic inflammatory diseases (shoulder, hip, elbow),
- Neurological disorders involving muscle spasm: multiple sclerosis, chronic myelopathy, degenerative diseases of the bone marrow, cerebral vascular accidents stroke), cerebral palsy etc.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given tizanidine.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Tablets:

Each tablet contains 2 mg tizanidine. The other tablet components are lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid and silica colloidal anhydrous.

Capsules:

In addition to 2, 4 or 6 mg tizanidine, these presentations contain lactose, ferrous-ferric oxide, silicon dioxide, gelatin, methyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, potassium hydroxide, propylene glycol, red ferric oxide, shellac, talc, titanium dioxide and yellow ferric oxide.

Important information     

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact him before taking it

Before taking the drug     

Do not use tizanidine

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to tizanidine or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you are taking fluvoxamine, an antidepressant drug
- If you are taking ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic to treat certain infections.

Take special care with tizanidine

- If you have kidney or liver failure, as your doctor may need to adjust the dose of tizanidine
- If you are taking more than 12 mg tizanidine (6 tablets) and note that you have nausea, fatigue and/or loss of appetite, contact your doctor since he may deem necessary to perform analysis periodically to monitor the proper functioning of your liver
- If you are taking antihypertensive medications at the same time as tizanidine, may result in lowered blood pressure, especially when you stand or sit up from the bed (orthostatic hypotension). This medicine can lead to alarming symptoms such as fainting, loss of consciousness and circulatory collapse, caused by the decreased blood pressure, even in patients not taking antihypertensive
- Do not change the dose or stop taking tizanidine without consulting your doctor.
- If you are taking oral contraceptives, you should tell your doctor, who should evaluate possible adjustments of the tizanidine dose since the contraceptives may increase the effects of this muscle relaxant.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Especially:

- The aforementioned fluvoxamine and ciprofloxacin (contraindicated)
- Antiarrhythmic drugs (used to treat heart rhythm disorders),
- Cimetidine, an antiulcer drug similar to ranitidine or famotidine,
- Fluoroquinolones, such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, etc., used to treat certain infections),
- Rofecoxib, an anti-inflammatory drug,
- Oral contraceptives,
- Ticlopidine (a drug used to prevent brain thromboembolic events),
- Medicines for high blood pressure, including diuretics, since tizanidine may enhance their effects,
- Powerful painkillers and sedatives. Tizanidine can enhance its effects.

If you are in any of these cases or are unsure, consult your doctor before starting to use tizanidine.

Use with food and beverages

Alcohol may increase the sedative effects of tizanidine so you are advised to abstain from alcohol while taking this medication.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Tizanidine is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Children:

Not recommended.

Driving and using machines

This medicine may make you feel sleepy or dizzy, have a cold sweat or perceive flashes, so you should not drive or operate dangerous machinery while taking.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.

How to use tizanidine     

Follow carefully instructions of use of tizanidine provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The usual doses are:

Adults

2-4 mg three times a day (6-12 mg, in 3-6 tablets or its equivalent in capsules). The physician may increase to 8 tablets per day in cases of major importance. Do not exceed 18 mg per day.

Hepatic or renal impairment:

In each case the doctor will prescribe the most appropriate dose, taking into account the patient's situation.

In cases of spasticity of neurological origin, the starting dose will be 6-8 mg a day increasing it gradually up to achieve the adequate clinical response; in extreme cases can be reached up to 36 mg a day, doing it very gradually, to minimize possible adverse effects.

If you are a smoker:

Tell your doctor if you are a smoker as you may need a higher dose than usual.

Children:

Tizanidine is not recommended in children.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take tizanidine     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking tizanidine.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of tizanidine. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with tizanidine at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with tizanidine, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately or call the National Toxicological Information Service in your country. If you have taken an overdose of tizanidine, go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.

Overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, slowed heart rate, dizziness, drowsiness, constricted pupils, agitation, difficulty breathing or even coma.

If you forget to take tizanidine

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless you are very close to the next dose, in which case wait until be time to take next dose, omitting the missed dose.

Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses.

If you stop taking tizanidine

Do not change your dose or stop taking tizanidine without first consulting your doctor. Your doctor will reduce gradually the dose until stopping treatment. This will help prevent or reduce the risk of withdrawal symptoms such as hypertension or tachycardia (accelerated heartbeat).

Side Effects of tizanidine     

Like all medicines, tizanidine can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Common side effects

- Nervous system disorders: Drowsiness, dizziness.
- Cardiovascular disorders: Arterial hypotension, bradycardia (slowing of the pulse)
- Digestive disorders: Dry mouth.

Rare side effects

- General disorders: Fatigue, muscular weakness
- Psychiatric disorders: Hallucinations, sleep disorders, including insomnia
- Digestive and liver disorders: Nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, transient increase in transaminases

Very rare side effects

- Liver disorders: acute hepatitis, liver failure
