Do not use valacyclovir (valaciclovir)
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to valacyclovir (valaciclovir) or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.
Allergy symptoms may include:
- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).
Take special care with valacyclovir (valaciclovir)
- If you have a kidney disease or are elderly, your doctor may need to adjust the usual dose. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.
- Tell your doctor if you have a liver disease.
Valacyclovir does not cure genital herpes. Do not completely eliminate the risk that your sexual partner being infected. You should practice safe sex, in particular, condom use, even while being treated with valacyclovir.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.
If in doubt, consult your doctor.
Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.
Especially:
medicines for stomach problems related to acidity (eg. cimetidine), gout (eg. probenecid) or immunosuppressants (eg. mycophenolate mofetil cyclosporin, tacrolimus).
Use with food and beverages
Make sure you drink enough water during treatment with valacyclovir, to avoid dehydration, especially if you are elderly
Special physiological situations
Pregnancy and lactation:
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
You should not take this medicine if you are pregnant without the advice of your doctor.
If you discover you are pregnant during treatment, consult your doctor, as only he can judge whether you need further treatment.
You should not breastfeed during treatment with valaciclovir.
Driving and using machines
The influence of valaciclovir on the ability to drive and use machines does not exist or is negligible.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.
Follow carefully instructions of use of valacyclovir (valaciclovir) provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.
The tablets should be taken by mouth with plenty of water.
Adults:
For the treatment of herpes, the usual dose is 1000 mg, 3 times daily for 7 days. You should start taking valacyclovir no more than 3 days after the first symptoms have appeared.
To treat the first genital infection herpes simplex virus (HSV), the usual dose is 1 tablet of 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. You should start taking valacyclovir as soon as possible, at the beginning of the attack, preferably when the first signs of infection develop or when the eruption appears.
To treat recurring genital herpes simplex infections (HSV), the usual dose is 1000 mg per day for 5 days. The tablets may be taken together or separately, for example, morning and evening. You should start taking valacyclovir as soon as possible at the beginning of the attack, preferably when the first signs of infection develop or when the rash appears.
To prevent recurrent genital herpes simplex infections (VHS), the usual dose is 1 tablet of 500 mg per day. The tablet can be divided into halves or swallowed whole, for example, half at the morning and the other half at the evening. The doctor must re-evaluate the effectiveness of treatment after 6 to 12 months.
To prevent infections and cytomegalovirus disease (CMV) , the usual dose is 2000 mg 4 times a day, usually for 90 days. Treatment should begin as soon as possible after organ transplantation.
Adolescents over 12 years:
To prevent infection and cytomegalovirus disease (CMV), the usual dose is 2000 mg 4 times a day, usually for 90 days. Treatment should begin as soon as possible after organ transplantation.
Children under 12 years
Valacyclovir is not recommended for use in children under 12 years because no enough data are available regarding safety and efficacy of this drug.
If you have a kidney failure
If you have kidney failure your doctor will adjust the dose.
If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, valacyclovir (valaciclovir) can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.
The frequency of side effects is classified into:
Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data
If you experience any of the following effects, immediately contact your doctor or go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital:
Sudden difficulty in breathing, speaking and swallowing; swelling of the lips, the face and neck (angioedema); extreme dizziness or collapse*; itching, sudden rash. This can be a serious allergic reaction has been reported very rarely.
If you experience any of the following effects, immediately contact your doctor:
- Frequent and/or severe infections (especially sore throats) ;
- Unexplained fever;
- Ulcers in the mouth and/or throat ;
- Bruising or abnormal bleeding without an evident reason;
- Small red spots on the skin and/or mouth.
These effects may be due to blood disorders (reduction of white blood cells that protect against infections, reduced platelets that help blood clot), which have been reported very rarely.
If you experience any of the following side effects, contact your doctor as soon as possible:
- Stomach upset such as Discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea and stomachache;
- headaches;
- rash (which may also occur after exposure to UV light, sunbathing or using a tanning bed;
Also have been reported the following side effects:
Common side effects:
- Nausea
- Headache.
Uncommon side effects:
- Difficulty breathing (dyspnea);
- rashes, sometimes caused by sensitivity to sunlight .
Rare side effects:
- Dizziness;
- Confusion;
- Hallucinations;
- Altered mental status ;
- Reduced consciousness ;
- Drowsiness ;
- Abdominal discomfort;
- Vomiting;
- Diarrhea;
- Itching;
- Renal failure.
Very rare side effects:
- An abnormal decrease in the number of white blood cells (leukopenia) ;
- Increased bleeding and reduced ability to clot (thrombocytopenia) ;
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) ;
- Agitation;
- Distortion of reality (psychotic symptoms) ;
- Involuntary tremor
or
movements in any part of the body (tremor);

Lack of coordination (ataxia) ;

Problems with speech,
unclear (confuse) pronunciation (dysarthria) ;

Crisis, seizures;

Alteration in the brain (encephalopathy) ;
