Indications and usage     

Zaleplon belongs to a class of compounds called drugs related to benzodiazepines, including substances with hypnotic properties.

This medicine will help you sleep. Sleep problems usually do not last long, and most people only need a short period of treatment. The duration of treatment usually varies from a few days up to two weeks. If you still have trouble falling sleep after you finish the zaleplon package, go back to your doctor.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given zaleplon.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Each capsule contains 5 or 10 mg of the active ingredient. The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, indigo carmine and titanium dioxide. The capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, black iron oxide, sodium lauryl sulfate and silicon dioxide. The printing ink cover contains shellac, lecithin, simethicone, and yellow iron oxide.

Important information     

The capsules contain lactosr. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to sugars, contact him before taking it.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use zaleplon

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to zaleplon or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you have the sleep apnea syndrome
- If you suffer from severe kidney or liver problems.
- If you have myasthenia gravis (a disease characterized by severe muscle weakness)
- If you have difficulty breathing or chest discomfort

If you have any questions about whether you are in any of these situations, consult your doctor.

Patients under 18 should not take zaleplon.

Take special care with zaleplon

- Never drink alcohol while being treated with zaleplon. Alcohol may increase the adverse effects of any medication you are taking to help you sleep.
- Use this drug with extreme caution if you have ever been addicted to drugs or alcohol.
- If you are taking medication that belongs to the group of sleep inducers, including zaleplon, there is a possibility that you become dependent on these drugs. Once physical dependence has developed, abrupt termination of treatment may be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms may include headaches, muscle pain, extreme anxiety, tension, restlessness, confusion, and irritability.
- Do not take zaleplon or any other sleeping medication for longer than your doctor has told you.
- Do not take a second dose of zaleplon on the same night.
- If your insomnia persists or worsens after a short treatment with this medicine, consult your doctor.
- When you take medication to sleep there is a possibility that you may experience a certain type of temporary memory loss (amnesia) and loss of coordination. This could be avoided if you remain inactive for at least 4 hours after taking zaleplon.
- There is a possibility that you may experience somnambulism (sleepwalking), including eating or driving while not fully awake and do not remember the event. If you experience any of these effects, contact your doctor immediately.
- After using any drug that belongs to the group of sleep inducers, including zaleplon, have been observed reactions like restlessness, agitation, irritability, aggressiveness, abnormal thinking, delusions, rages, nightmares, depersonalisation, hallucinations, psychoses, inappropriate behavior, extroversion unusual and other behavioral disturbances. These reactions can be produced by the active principle, of spontaneous origin, or resulting from an underlying physical or psychiatric disorder. It is more likely that these reactions occur in the elderly. If you experience any of these effects, contact your doctor immediately.
- There have been observed rare cases of severe allergic reactions. An allergic reaction may include rash, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, or nausea and vomiting. If you experience any of these effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Consult your doctor, if any of the above circumstances had ever happened.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

When this medicine is taken with other medicines that act on the brain, the combination may make you more drowsy than it should. Note that these combinations can cause drowsiness the next day.

These medications include :

- Drugs used to treat mental illness (antipsychotic, hypnotics, anxiolytics / sedatives,antidepressants),
- Medicines used to relieve severe pain (narcotic analgesics) ,
- Medications used to treat seizures (AEDs),
- Medications used to lose feeling/insensibility ( anesthetics) y
- Medications used to treat allergies (sedating antihistamines).

If you are taking cimetidine (stomach medicine), or erythromycin (an antibiotic), tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Use with food and beverages

It is not recommended to take this medicine with or immediately after a heavy meal as it may work more slowly. Take the medicine with a little water. Never drink alcohol while being treated with zaleplon.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor if you are or intend to become pregnant

Zaleplon should not be used in these circumstances because there are not enough clinical data available to assess its safety during pregnancy.

Use in children

Not be used in children under 18 years.

Use in elderly

Depending on your age and other circumstances, your doctor may prescribe a different dose to the usual.

Driving and using machines

This medicine may make you feel drowsy, cause loss of concentration or memory or muscle weakness. These feelings may worsen if you sleep less than 7 to 8 hours after taking your medicine. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery.

How to use zaleplon     

Follow carefully instructions of use of zaleplon provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The normal dose for adults is 10 mg immediately before bedtime or after having slept and having difficulty falling asleep. Do not take a second dose within the same night.

The doses are different for people 65 and older, and those with mild or moderate liver problems:

- Patients 65 years or older: The recommended dose is 5 mg.
- Mild or moderate liver problems: The recommended dose is 5 mg.

If the capsule is dissolved in a liquid, changes its color and becomes turbid.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take zaleplon     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking zaleplon.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of zaleplon. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with zaleplon at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with zaleplon, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Seek medical advice immediately and tell the doctor how much capsules you have taken. Do not go to seek medical help without being accompanied.

If you take an overdose, you may suffer a very fast increase of drowsiness, and may reach a comatous state .

If you forget to take zaleplon

Take the next dose at the usual time and continue as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

If you stop taking zaleplon

When stopping treatment, may return your difficulty sleeping and you may experience symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety or fatigue. If you suffer from these symptoms, consult your doctor.

Side Effects of zaleplon     

Like all medicines, zaleplon can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

Common side effects:

- drowsiness;
- difficulty memorizing;
- tingling, eg in the extremities (paraesthesia) ;
- painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea).

Uncommon side effects:

- dizziness;
- weakness;
- reduced coordination of movements;
- unsteadiness and/or falls (ataxia);
- decreased concentration,
- apathy;
- restlessness;
- depression;
- agitation;
- irritability;
- confusion,
- thoughts and behaviors unusual (extroversion out of the ordinary, decreased inhibition, aggressiveness, fury, delirium, depersonalization , psychosis);
- nightmares ;
- hallucinations;
- double vision or other vision problems;
- increased sensitivity to noise (hyperacusis);
- altered sense of smell (parosmia);
- speech disorders, including slurred speech;
- numbness, eg in the extremities (hypoaesthesia);
- nausea, decreased appetite;
- increased sensitivity to light (sunlight, UV light) ;
- discomfort (malaise) .

In very rare cases they have been observed allergic reactions, some severe, sometimes with difficulty breathing, and may require immediate medical attention. An allergic reaction may also include eruption, itching or swollen face, lips, throat or tongue (angioedema) .

It has been reported Increases in transaminases (a group of liver enzymes found naturally in the blood), which can be a sign of liver problems.
