Indications and usage ▲

Fenofibrate belongs to a group of drugs, fibrates, which act by modifying the concentration of lipids (fats) in the blood.

Fenofibrate is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood when a low-fat diet and other nonpharmacological measures such as weight reduction or exercise, do not achieve this purpose.

Often, this medicine may increase the amounts of good cholesterol, also called HDL cholesterol.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given fenofibrate.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

The active ingredient is fenofibrate. The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal anhydrous silica, crospovidone, sodium stearyl fumarate. The coating film includes Opadry (OY-B 28920), polyvinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, talc, soy lecithin, xanthan gum.

The composition may vary slightly among different specialties. Some also contain sucrose.

Important information ▲

This medicine may contain lactose and sucrose, according to the specialty in question. If your doctor has warned you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult him before taking it.

If you are allergic to peanuts, peanut oil or soy lecithin and its derivatives, do not take this medication without consulting previously your doctor.

Before taking the drug ▲

Do not use fenofibrate

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to fenofibrate, to similar substances or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you have liver failure, including liver cirrhosis
- If you have renal failure (kidney)
- If you suffer allergic reactions to light during treatment with fibrates or ketoprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
- If you have gallstones.
- If the patient is a child.
- If you are breastfeeding or you are pregnant
- If you suffer acute or chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas which causes abdominal pain) unless this pancreatitis is caused by high levels of a type of fat in the blood (hypertriglyceridemia).
- If you are taking blood thinners.
- If you suffer from hypothyroidism
- You drink a large amount of alcohol.

Take special care with fenofibrate

- If you are taking anticoagulants orally. Your doctor properly will change the dose of these .
- If you are taking another cholesterol-lowering statin type (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors)
- If you are taking cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant)
- If muscle pain, muscle weakness or cramps appear, notify your doctor before occurs a rhabdomyolysis. This is manifested clinically by the appearance of dark urines (but without blood) and increased markers and muscle enzymes and other renal dysfunctions.

Before starting treatment and regularly during the first year of treatment, you will undergo tests of liver function (ALT and AST transaminases) and creatinine.

Treatment should be stopped if the level of ALT exceeds 3 times the normal level or if a very high increase in creatinine level occurs.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medicine only for you. Never give it to someone else.

If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

Certain drugs may interact with fenofibrate; in these cases, it may be necessary to change the dose or stop treatment with any of them.

It is important that you tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any of the following medications:

- Oral anticoagulants,
- cyclosporin,
- other fibrates.

Use with food and beverages

Fenofibrate should be taken with a main meal of the day.

Special physiological situations

Pregnancy and lactation:

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Taking this drug it is contraindicated in pregnant women and during lactation. If you discover you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, immediately stop treatment and consult your doctor.

Children

Fenofibrate is not indicated in children

Driving and using machines

Fenofibrate does not seem to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery or tools.

How to use fenofibrate ▲

Follow carefully the instructions of use of fenofibrate provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

The recommended dosage is one tablet per day orally. Your doctor will decide the dosage form content best suited for you (from 48 up to 300 mg) .

The treatment is administered in a single dose per day and the tablet must be swallowed whole during one of the main meals.

In association with the appropriated dietetic regime and a healthy lifestyle, this medicine is a symptomatic treatment and should be prolonged and regularly monitored.

For a good use of this medicine, it is essential to undergo regular medical surveillance.

While you take fenofibrate ▲

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking fenofibrate.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of fenofibrate. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with fenofibrate at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with fenofibrate, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

In the case of overdose, tell your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Take the pack and the rest of unconsumed medicine.

If you forget to take fenofibrate

Do not take a double dose to make up for missed doses.

Side Effects of fenofibrate ▲

Like all medicines, fenofibrate can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients
Incidence not known: Can not be established the true incidence from the available data

These side effects include:

Gastrointestinal disorders:

Common side effects: digestive disorders, gastric or intestinal (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gasses) of moderate intensity.

Uncommon side effects: Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas that causes abdominal pain), with the exception of acute pancreatitis due to severe hypertriglyceridemia.

Hepatobiliary disorders:

Common side effects:: Have been observed in some patients moderate elevations of transaminase levels in the blood.

Uncommon side effects:: development of gallstones.

Very rare side effects: episodes of hepatitis. In the case of occurrence of symptoms suggestive of hepatitis (such as yellowing of the skin and itching must be conducted new clinical tests for its verification and, if required, treatment should be discontinued.

Disorders of skin and subcutaneous tissue:

Common side effects:: redness, itching, urticaria or photosensitivity reactions.

Rare side effects: baldness.

Very rare side effects: f Photosensitivity with skin redness, blistering or nodules of the parts of the skin exposed to sunlight or artificial UV light (sunlamps) in individual cases (even several months after stopping treatment).

Muscle disorders, connective tissue, and bone:

Rare side effects: diffuse muscle pain, myositis (muscle inflammation), muscle cramps, and muscle weakness.

Very rare side effects: rhabdomyolysis.

Cardiac and vascular disorders

Uncommon side effects:: thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung that causes chest pain and difficulty breathing), deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg that causes pain, redness and swelling).

Disorders of the lymphatic system and blood:

Rare side effects: decreased hemoglobin and leukocytes

Nervous system disorders:

Rare side effects: sexual weakness.

Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders:

Very rare side effects: interstitial lung disease.

Changes in laboratory tests:

Uncommon side effects:: increasing blood levels of creatinine and urea
