Indications and usage     

Hypromellose is in the form of low viscosity ophthalmic solution that alleviates states of dry eye, eliminating the discomfort of lack of wetting of the cornea by its lubricant and protector properties.

This drug is indicated for the treatment of symptoms of dry eye.

Medizzine recommends consulting your doctor if you are unsure (or you do not know) why you have been given hypromellose.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Solution in multidose containers: One ml of eye drops solution contains as active ingredient 1-5 mg hypromellose. The other ingredients vary from a specialty to another and may include cetrimide, sodium dodecahydrate hydrogen phosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, disodium edetate, sorbitol, benzalkonium chloride and water for injections.

Single-dose solution: Each ml contains 1-5 mg hypromellose. Other ingredients may include dextran 70. sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, monosodium phosphate and purified water.

Important information     

Cautions with hypromellose

Wearers of soft contact lenses should remove them before administration of hypromellose solution and wait at least 15 minutes to wear them again. You do not need any other special precaution. However, if symptoms persist, they worsen or appear eye pain or change in vision, consult your doctor.

Before taking the drug     

Do not use hypromellose

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to hypromellose or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

It may be necessary to change the dose, or in some cases, discontinue one treatment. This applies to all types of drugs, but especially for:

Pregnancy and lactation:

How to use hypromellose     

Follow carefully the instructions of use of hypromellose provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given in this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Generally, will be applied 1 or 2 drops in the eye/s affected, as many times as necessary. The number of daily applications and the duration of treatment may be modified according to medical criteria. The treatment of dry eye syndrome requires an individualized dosing regime

When using multi-dose containers, not use after one month of opening the bottle.

Before using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes.

Recommendations for the use of single-dose eye drops

Since it is a sterile preparation, it is recommended to follow these instructions:

- Each single dose unit should be used on a single patient.
- The application of single-dose eye drops should be done with maximum hygiene: cleaning of hands and avoiding any possible contact of the dropper with any surface (including eye).
- Each single-dose unit should be discarded after use.

If you think the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor.

While you take hypromellose     

If a doctor prescribes another medicine, tell you are taking hypromellose.

Check with your doctor regularly developments of disorder that motivates the use of hypromellose. Maybe there is some reason that prevented you properly receive the indicated doses and induce your doctor to erroneous conclusions about treatment.

Do not restart treatment with hypromellose at your own risk without first talking to your doctor, nor encourage its use by another person, even if have the same symptoms you have. Nor is it advisable to interrupt or reduce the dose without considering the opinion of your doctor.

If you feel unwell during treatment with hypromellose, immediately consult your doctor.

If you take more than you should:

Due to the characteristics of this medicine, are not expected to produce phenomena of intoxication by the topical use of these specialties. In the case of overdose or accidental ingestion, consult the Toxicology Information Service in your country.

Side Effects of hypromellose     

Like all medicines, hypromellose can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients

Occasionally may occur mild and transient burning sensation or itching and rarely irritation reactions or hypersensitivity. Occasionally may occur palpebral adhesiveness.
