Indications and usage     

The active ingredient levonorgestrel in a 750 or 1500 micrograms dosage form, is indicated for emergency contraception within 72 hours of having had unprotected sex or a failure of birth control measures.

Emergency contraception is an occasional method. In no case should replace a conventional contraceptive method.

Emergency contraception does not prevent pregnancy in every case, especially if there is no certainty about the time that occurred the unprotected sex. If in doubt (if menstruation is delayed more than 5 days or you a different bleeding than usual on schedule for the menstruation or you have symptoms of pregnancy), a possible pregnancy should be excluded by a pregnancy test.

Other ingredients of available commercial presentations:

Besides 750 or 1500 micrograms levonorgestrel, this medicine contains as excipient lactose monohydrate, corn starch, povidone, colloidal anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate.

Important information     

This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult him before taking it.

Before taking levonorgestrel     

Do not use levonorgestrel

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you. If you think may be allergic, ask your doctor.

Allergy symptoms may include:

- Asthma attacks with shortness of breath, audible wheezing or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or elsewhere in the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords.
- Hives, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc.).

Nor you should take this medicine:

- If you are pregnant,
- If you have a breast cancer,
- If you have had unprotected sex intercourse more than 72 hours earlier during the same menstrual cycle, as cannot be excluded a pregnancy,
- If You are suffering a vaginal bleeding of unknown origin,

Take special care with levonorgestrel

If unprotected sex occurred more than 72 hours ago within the same menstrual cycle, you should consider the possibility of pregnancy. Levonorgestrel can be ineffective if you hold a second sexual relationship during treatment.

If you become pregnant, since it is possible an ectopic pregnancy (the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus). It is likely that the absolute risk of ectopic pregnancy is low as levonorgestrel prevents ovulation and fertilization. The ectopic pregnancy may continue, despite the occurrence of uterine bleeding. Therefore, this drug is not recommended for patients at risk of suffering an ectopic pregnancy (with a history of salpingitis or ectopic pregnancy).

If you have a serious malabsorption syndrome, such as Crohn's disease, as it can decrease the effectiveness of levonorgestrel.

If you have severe liver disease, it is not recommended the use of levonorgestrel.

After taking the drug, menstrual periods are usually normal. Sometimes, an advance or delay of several days may occur with respect to the expected date.

See your doctor to initiate or adopt a conventional method of contraception. If routinely used a hormonal contraceptive method and not menstruation appears in the rest period following administration of levonorgestrel, a pregnancy test should be performed to rule out a possible pregnancy.

Levonorgestrel is not as effective as a conventional contraceptive method and is only intended as an emergency measure. If you have sued treatment for emergency contraception repeatedly, you should consult your doctor for the adoption of a conventional contraception method.

Repeated administration of this drug within the same menstrual cycle is not advisable, due to the possibility of an appearance of cycle disorders.

The use of emergency contraception does not replace the necessary measures to take against sexually transmitted diseases precautions, including AIDS.

Taking other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including herbal products or drugs obtained without a prescription.

If you are receiving other medications, you should let know to any doctor who will prescribe you a medication, to avoid interactions between several of them, especially anticonvulsants (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone and carbamazepine), Some antibiotic(such as rifampicin and rifabutin), a medicine for the treatment of fungal infections called griseofulvin, an antiviral drug called ritonavir, or medicinal plants containing hypericum (Hypericum perforatum or St. John's wort).

Medicines containing levonorgestrel may increase the cyclosporine's toxic risk.

Pregnancy and lactation

Pregnancy

Levonorgestrel should not be administered to pregnant women. The pregnancy will not be interrupted as a result of its administration.

Lactation

Levonorgestrel passes into breast milk. Infant exposure to the drug can be reduced if the tablet is taken immediately after breastfeeding, avoiding giving breastmilk the baby for at least the next 6 hours after its administration.

Driving and using machines

It is not known if levonorgestrel has an effect on the ability to drive and use machines.

How to use levonorgestrel     

Follow carefully the instructions of use of levonorgestrel provided from your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Follow the instructions of the physician in preference to those given on this website, which may be different. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

Treatment involves the administration of one 1500 microgram tablet or two 750 mg levonorgestrel tablets orally.

For more effectiveness, the treatment should begin as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse. Therefore, the tablet should be taken preferably within the first 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after having had unprotected sex.

If treatment with levonorgestrel necessary, you can take it at any time of the menstrual cycle, as long as there have not been a delay of menstrual bleeding.

After using oral emergency contraception is recommended to use a barrier method (condom, diaphragm, etc.) until the start of the next menstrual cycle.

Using this medicine does not contraindicate the continuation of regular hormonal contraception. If you have used this medicine while using oral contraception (birth control pill) should continue taking the tablets until the end of treatment, as usual.

How to act in case of diarrhea and vomiting:

If you vomit or have diarrhea during the three first hours after taking levonorgestrel or if you have any alteration of the intestine that hinders absorption, it is possible that the active substance has been not completely absorbed.

If you take more than you should:

Side Effects of levonorgestrel     

Like all medicines, levonorgestrel can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

The frequency of side effects is classified into:

Very common: affect 1 out of 1-10 patients
Common: affect 1 out of 10-100 patients
Uncommon: affect 1 out of 100-1.000 patients
Rare: affect 1 out of 1.000-10.000 patients
Very Rare: affect less than 1 in 10,000 patients

Nausea is the most common adverse effect reported after levonorgestrel administration.

Other side effects reported are:

Reproductive system and breast:

Very common side effects: bleeding not related to menstruation, menstruation delayed more than 7 days, irregular bleeding and spotting, increased breast tenderness.

Nervous system disorders:

Very common side effects: a headache and dizziness.

Gastrointestinal disorders:

Very common side effects: pain in the lower abdomen, nausea.

Common side effects: diarrhea, vomiting.

General disorders:

Very common side effects: fatigue.

Menstrual bleeding may temporarily be altered, although most women have the menstruation in the 7 days around the expected date. If the next menstrual period is delayed more than 5 days, a pregnancy test should be performed to rule out a possible pregnancy.

Skin and subcutaneous tissue side effects:

Very rare side effects: rash, urticaria, pruritus (itching), edema (swelling) in the face.

These side effects usually disappear within 48 hours after levonorgestrel administration. The increased breast tenderness, spotting, and irregular bleeding have been reported in up to 30 out of 100 women treated, and can last until the next menstrual period.
